Ports can be dangerous places to work in and this is why Shoreham Port is dedicated to taking its first aid responsibilities seriously. In such a fast paced working environment it is important to have trained staff available across the Port to ensure help is never too far away, should an incident occur.
First Aid is a core skill that the Port encourages all staff to develop. Currently over 65% of the Ports work force are trained in First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid Training, with this figure set to increase to around 75% by the end of 2016.
All the Ports qualified first aiders are trained in the use of a defibrillator should an emergency situation arise and warrant its use. Most recently Shoreham Port has purchased two additional defibrillators, bringing the total number to four across the premises.
By doubling the amount of defibrillators on site, the Ports first aiders will be able to improve their First Aid reaction time to a cardiac arrest dramatically. The closer a defibrillator is, the quicker the first aider can administer care effectively in a time
sensitive situation. For this reason the Port were eager to purchase the new additions. The defibrillators have been strategically located in four locations across the Port so that they can be reached quickly during an emergency.

We feel we are doing the right thing by our dedicated team and the community by training our staff in first aid and giving them the confidence and tools to assist someone under their
duty of care.”
