The country's largest community of Mariners who had congregated for their Annual Meet yesterday under the banner of the Company of Master Mariners' of India (CMMI) extended their greatest honor to one of the founders, the 92-year old Capt Inderjit Singh. In the presence of over 1,000 strong gathering Capt Philip Mathews, Chairman of CMMI presented Capt Singh with the most prestigious "CMMI Lift Time Achievement Award", which the august body is bestowing for the first time in its nearly 60 years history.
Marking the occasion Capt Mathews said, "This first award is bestowed for the first time on our legendary Capt Singh, Fellow Life Member, who was Captain Superintendent of T. S. Bhadra, T. S. Dufferin and T. S. Rajendra for many years and has shaped many of our careers during the formative years."
He went on to remark that the CMMI believes that 'We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.' "With this in mind, we have this year instituted two very Special Awards, in order to acclaim those who have chased this value." He hoped that in times to come these awards be amongst the most prestigious and sought after ones in view of the transparency and absolute professional integrity in the process of dertermination.
The CMMI also acknowledge two Mariners who recently demonstrated Exemplary Service in action at Sea in saving lives. Appreciating the services rendered by two master mariners, the CMMI jury decided to present two awards i.e. to Capt. Joshua Peris Bhat, who was in command of M/V C.S. Caprice and Capt Reuben Chauhan in command of M/V Don Giovanni.
Capt Mathews informed about the number of chapters have been established in the recent past and hoped this trend continues. Speaking about the achievements of CMMI which is soon to acquire ISO certification said, "We are for the first time likely to be part of the Indian delegation whenever it meets at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) meetings held in London. We are also very hopeful of involving ourselves in HNS cargo profiling at Indian ports and Inspection to verify that the certified process, associated instruments, etc. confirm to the ability of the shipper to comply with rules regarding Gross Verified Mass of Containers."
