Total barge tonnage through the Port of Little Rock in September was 52,000 net tons. Dock activities have slowed slightly; however they continue to compare favorably to calendar year 2015. Logistic Services, Inc. has handled 383 barges during the nine months of 2016 year and 578,000 net tons of various commodities have moved across the docks at the Port of Little Rock.
Break bulk commodities accounted for just over half of the total river tonnage for September. Cargoes handled across the docks included potash, sand, rock, wetcake, bauxite, granite fines, wire rod coils, scrap metal, pipe and steel coils.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that 903,538 tons of commodities moved through the McClellan-Kerr Navigation System in September 2016.
“The Arkansas River is an incredible resource for industry here in central Arkansas and provides an opportunity for the Port of Little Rock to compete with the world,” said Bryan Day, Executive Director of the Little Rock Port Authority. “We continue to be pleased with were we are for fiscal year 2016 and hope that our efforts will only increase tonnage in the future.”
