The Landing School, a post-secondary institution focused on educating tomorrow’s marine industry professionals, has enrolled 81 students in their class of 2014, an increase of 16% over the previous year. This near record roster of students registered on September 3 and officially began classes on September 4.
The incoming class is divided amongst four disciplines: Wooden Boat Building (Small or Cruising Boats option), Marine Systems, Yacht Design and Composite Boat Building. They hail from 20 states and three countries and range in age from 18-63. The school said 24 students are returning for their second year to work towards completing an associate degree.
“This rise in students is attributed to several factors,” said Bob DeColfmacker, President of The Landing School. “First and foremost, our marketing and admissions staff has worked extremely hard to create an online community that helps prospective students find the information that need about the school so that they can make an informed decision about what we offer and what they have to gain. Secondly, the staff has worked with each inquiry personally, providing the financial, educational and career information students need to feel confident in their choice to continue their education. Lastly, we are seeing a distinct upturn in the industry as job openings continue to stream in from all over the country. Students are recognizing that The Landing School can help them reach their goal of obtaining a highly sought after career in the marine industry.”
With the incoming class come three new staff members. Ann Strachan has been hired as the Student Success Advisor. Peter Warren is the new math teacher and Libby Rust is working to aid in development efforts.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of The Landing School community,” said Ken Rusinek, Director of Education. “We have several new faculty members who bring a fresh perspective to the school. New staff members are helping to expand on the services we offer our students. And the students are coming here knowing that when they achieve their diploma or associate degree they will be able to find a job in what is a quickly recovering marine industry.”
