iCargo Launches EU-Funded Logistics Program

April 23, 2012

iCargo, the pan-European cargo and logistics project part funded by the EU, has formally launched its three and a half year framework program.

The project, formally titled “Intelligent Cargo in Efficient and Sustainable Global Logistics Operations” includes research, development, demonstration and dissemination elements designed to improve the performance of real-world logistics. Building on the success of the previous Freightwise and e-Freight frameworks, iCargo will develop an affordable, open information architecture that allows real world objects, existing systems, and new applications to efficiently co-operate. This will enable more cost effective and lower-CO2 logistics, through improved synchronisation and load factors across all transport modes including contributing to a reduction in the number of freight vehicles in urban traffic

David Quesada, Co-ordinator of iCargo commented: “By ensuring extensive dissemination of research results, demonstration and pilot cases, validation activities, the results of iCargo will be transferred to the international transport logistics community immediately after the project. This will ensure that the value generated by iCargo can be adopted and utilised in the commercial cargo and logistics domain.”
