June saw a return to strong activity at the Port of Little Rock. Logistic Services Inc. (LSI), the Port’s stevedore, handled 42 barges with over 64,000 net tons of cargo during the month.  The main dock was busier as LSI worked 25 barges with over 37,000 net tons. The slackwater harbor dock handled 27,000 tons from 17 barges.

Bulk commodities including nepheline syenite, potash, rock, sand, urea and wetcake accounted for 59 percent of the handled tonnage as break-bulk commodities including aluminum ingots and tee bars, steel coils and wire rod coils.

Through the first five months of the year LSI has worked 230 barges with over 307,000 net tons of cargo loaded or unloaded on the docks. Total tonnage on the MKARNS for the month of June was 1,049,332 tons.

“Barge activity on the Arkansas River remains steady and offers affordable transportation alternatives to local industry,” said Bryan Day, Executive Director of the Little Rock Port Authority.  “As America begins to reshore industries from around the globe, the inland river system will provide a safe efficient way to move cargo.  The Port of Little Rock is ready to embrace these opportunities and grow jobs for the community,” continued Day.
