The regional Environmental Center of the Northern Fleet will be established in the Arctic in the near future.
The news agency TASS reported the news with reference to the Deputy Russian Defense Minister Army General Dmitry Bulgakov.
According to the Deputy Defense Minister, the Center will carry out environmental monitoring and control compliance with Russian and international environmental legislation both in locations of the Fleet and in the Arctic, where Russian troops are deployed.
As noted by Dmitry Bulgakov, the Russian military presence in the Arctic shall not lead to an increase in the number of sources of pollution in the region.
The Deputy Minister also said that the Ministry of Defense had developed a roadmap for compliance with environmental protection requirements in the Arctic. According to the document, the Ministry undertakes to ensure proper maintenance of military bases in the Arctic zone within several years.
‘In particular, in the next few years, we plan to demolish dilapidated or destroyed buildings, perform reclamation of territories, that is to deal with rubble, extract metal constructions and carry out a number of other activities of an ecological nature,’ added the General.
