United States based commodities trader Hudson Shipping Lines (HSL) became a member of the Trident Alliance as part of the company’s ongoing ‘green’ initiatives.

The shipping company is increasing its commitment to cleaning up the shipping industry in conjunction with two environmental organizations. Hudson has recently joined the Trident Alliance as a member.

“The shipping industry has a tremendous opportunity to improve its impact upon the world with the IMO 2020 sulfur cap. Hudson believes it has a responsibility to encourage companies and countries to comply with both the letter and also the spirit of the sulfur rules,” said company President, Avi Eilon. Hudson has previously announced its intentions to not charter or use vessels with open or closed loop exhaust scrubbers installed following the implementation of the IMO2020 sulfur cap on January 1, 2020.

Hudson’s membership in the Trident Alliance is part of Hudson’s efforts to ensure that the shipping industry lives up to the standards set by the global sulfur cap.

The Trident Alliance’s core mission of ensuring adequate enforcement of sulfur regulations is a necessary foundation for this goal. Hudson will work with and within the Trident Alliance to ensure robust enforcement of all maritime sulfur regulations and develop new technologies to monitor ships’ compliance with the regulations.

Hudson also believes that the current form of sulfur regulations contains a major loophole that is being abused by irresponsible shipowners to allow the continued use of high sulfur fuel oil (HSFO).

While Hudson intends to work with the Trident Alliance on enforcement of sulfur regulations, Hudson will be supporting organizations that lobby countries, customers, producers and ports to ban exhaust gas scrubber systems, and encourage shipowners and the banks and financiers who finance their operation to cease their use and installation.

Founded in 1972, and part of the Seatrade group since 1993, Hudson is a supply chain management company with an integrated global shipping portfolio utilizing some 70 dry bulk carriers.
