After six weeks of waiting at Constanza/Romania, MSC FLAMINIA has put into the port of Constanza; cause of fire still not ascertained.
MV MSC Flaminia caught fire on 14 July 2012, claiming three lives (two confirmed dead and one missing) and forcing the crew to abandon ship in the middle of the Atlantic. After the fire had been brought under control, the stricken container ship was towed to Germany and in March 2013, she departed Wilhelmshaven for Mangalia, Romania for repairs.
Fire fighting experts of the cargo owners, of the charterer and of REEDEREI NSB will board the vessel in Magalia to continue the investigation into the cause of the damage.
Before MSC FLAMINIA can proceed to the Daewoo shipyards in Mangalia, the ship will be lightened. MSC FLAMINA’s draft amounts to 8.80m, the shipyard’s draft limit is 6.40m. To lighten the vessel, cargo holds 4,5 and 6 will be cleared of remaining containers and cargo residues.
The owners say that this stage will approximately last one month. Afterwards, MSC FLAMINIA will be repaired in the shipyard there.
