An engineering expert is set to talk at a Society of Petroleum Engineers’ (SPE) Aberdeen Section presentation this month, discussing the challenges associated with the analysis and design of offshore engineering equipment.

Offshore marine equipment can be physically complex, expensive, safety critical and required to operate in harsh environments. This means that regulations for design and manufacturing processes can differ based on a number of factors, including project complexity and environment.

Dr. John White, technical director at Prospect Flow Solutions, has more than 15 years of professional engineering experience in the automotive and oil and gas sectors and will present at the SPE Aberdeen event on 26 March.

Dr. White, a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, said: “In the design and analysis phase of any offshore project, the energy industry is reliant upon simulation and calculation to ensure that health and safety and industry standards are adhered to.

“Any design process requires a fundamental understanding of various design parameters and how they interact. Design standards and guidelines exist for conventional equipment and structures, however a misunderstanding of these parameters or even a change in the operating environment can result in failure.”

Dr. White will discuss how these failures can be investigated and corrective action can be identified using advanced simulation methods, highlighted through a number of case studies.

Mr Anthony Onukwu, chairman of SPE Aberdeen, added: “Prospect Flow Solutions has a well established reputation of delivering engineering solutions for projects across the globe. Dr. White has a wealth of engineering experience and we are delighted that he will be sharing his expertise with us at our next presentation.”

The technical presentation will take place from 6.30 to 8.30pm on 26 March at the Douglas Hotel, Aberdeen.
