The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) informs it is seeking nominations to fill a Fleet Improvement Committee (FIC) Chair position.
The position, which becomes vacant in Fall 2015, would see the selected candidate assume leadership after the 2015 Annual UNOLS meeting on December 3-4, 2015.
The FIC works to assure the continuing excellence of the UNOLS Fleet and to assure that the number, mix and overall capability of ships in the UNOLS fleet match the science requirements of academic oceanography in the U.S.
At this time, FIC is engaged in several stages of new vessel planning including reviews of science mission requirements, construction and transition to operations. The future fleet composition, capabilities, capacity and user demand, along with budgetary realities are all areas that FIC will continue to evaluate.
Candidates should be experienced in the UNOLS Fleet and shipboard science activities. The FIC Chair position can be filled by a candidate from any UNOLS institution. Committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the standing FIC and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council.
Two FIC meetings are held annually. One meeting is normally held in the fall in conjunction with the UNOLS Council and Annual meetings in Arlington, Va. The second meeting is typically held in the winter/early spring and the location will vary from year to year. Additionally, the FIC Chair is a voting member of the UNOLS Council and is expected to attend meetings annually. The term of office is three years, with the possibility of reelection for a second term.
Applicants or nominees should submit: a current two-page C.V., a statement of interest to lead FIC activities, and a summary of experience within UNOLS and using research vessels and other oceanographic facilities.
Copies of these materials should be sent to the UNOLS Office (office@unols.org) by July 3, 2015.
