Navies of 20 nations from four continents exercise to preserve freedom of navigation in international waterways of the Middle East and promote regional stability.
The on-water exercise will be conducted in multiple locations. Within the Arabian Gulf, but well outside the Straits of Hormuz (SOH), there will be inert mine shapes placed in such a manner as they should not pose any hazard to commercial traffic.
The exercise is defensive in-nature and is hosted by the U.S. Navy. It is aimed at preserving freedom of navigation in international waterways in the Middle East. The scenario will encompass additional maritime security scenarios which will allow all participants to test the full range of their capabilities.
The exercise (IMCMEX) starts with an international symposium and move to an on-water exercise to demonstrate the international community's ability to work together to ensure free and secure trade.
The exercise runs from September 16-27, 2012.
