NASCENT Technology, a  provider of gate systems and related technologies, has announced that South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has selected NASCENT's SYNAPSE advanced Gate System, in combination with the company's enVision OCR Portal offerings, to facilitate gate processing for the CCM chassis yard at its Wando Terminal.

As part of its commitment to efficiently handle container volume growth at the Wando Terminal, SCPA is implementing the gate system with advanced OCR and imaging technologies to streamline the new chassis yard operation. The advanced gate solution provided by NASCENT is targeted to chassis pools and container terminals with dedicated chassis inspection and storage areas to help facilitate and manage those operations. Combining features such as OCR (Optical Character Recognition), LPR (License Plate Recognition), and driver-facing kiosks, the solution aims to eliminate errors and reduce wait time for drivers who are dropping off, picking up, or swapping a chassis.

For the Wando Terminal, NASCENT's advanced gate solution will exchange information — in real time — with the Terminal Operating System (TOS) and the chassis depot software that manages chassis inventory. The integration to these systems is considered critical for promoting data accuracy and ensuring a fast and simple transaction for the driver.

Although the Wando Terminal is the first of SCPA's container terminals to undergo a revamping and re-design of its chassis operations, including the development of a separate chassis yard, other terminals are not far behind.  "Our current focus is the Wando Terminal," said Steve Rauch, SCPA Director of Information Technology, "but similar plans are underway for the North Charleston and Hugh Leatherman Terminals as well.  While separating chassis operations from the terminal improves facility utilization, we believe that advanced gate operations at the chassis yard and a real-time connection to the TOS are essential."

In addition to providing a high-level of efficiency and accuracy for the new chassis operation, NASCENT's advanced gate solution supports compliance surrounding FMCSA's (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) roadability requirements and features an exclusive Tire Inspection option which allows system operators to review tire conditions.
