Australia's NSW Ports launched its new Sustainability Hub and 2019 Sustainability Plan, detailing its performance across environmental, social, economic and governance measures and outlining its proactive strategy and actions for the next three years.
NSW Ports CEO Marika Calfas welcomed the launch, and reiterated the company’s commitment to embedding a Port-wide culture of sustainability: “At NSW Ports, we manage the key trade gateways that connect the people and businesses of NSW to global markets. Our vision is to be a world class port and logistics manager, driving sustainable growth.
“Sustainability is integral not only to our business but to the long-term success of the supply chains in which we operate. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, our Port and Intermodal assets act as the engine room for NSW’s economy – delivering $4.4 Billion to Gross State Product and supporting around 30,000 jobs a year," Calfas added.
“We recognize that we have a responsibility to enact sustainable environmental, social and governance measures which minimize the impact we have on the natural environment and the communities in which we operate, and our 2019 plan highlights our achievements and actions for each of these areas,” Calfas concluded.
NSW Ports has a history of leading the way within Australia to drive sustainable outcomes. The Sustainability Hub and 2019 Sustainability Plan showcases the sustainability outcomes of more than 17 projects in the areas of infrastructure planning & development, transport operations, environmental protection, resource conservation, energy efficiency and stakeholder & community engagement.
One such initiative is the Environmental Shipping Incentive program, which through financial incentives is actively encouraging ships that have better air emissions performance than the international standard to visit Port Botany and Port Kembla.
As the first and only port in Australia to offer such a program, NSW Ports now has over 250 ships registered. The initiative also supports the World Ports Sustainability Program.
