Dimitris Pantelis, Professor at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Director of Shipbuilding Technology Laboratory at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece Mr will speak at the  ninth technical meeting for the 2013-2014 season.

Pantelis will speak on the subject of: ‘‘Friction Stir Welding of Similar and Dissimilar Aluminium Alloys’’.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is an innovative solid-state welding process and nowadays is widespread due to its advantages related to the quality of the welds, due to the absence of defects resulting from melting. FSW has many applications in aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive and marine industries and is mostly used for similar and dissimilar welding of aluminium alloys. The principle of the method, the advantages and the limitations of FSW will be extensively presented. The complex microstructure of the treated materials and its correlation with their mechanical properties will be analyzed and the influences of the main operational parameters will be discussed. Moreover, new developments of FSW and the applications of this process in shipbuilding will be presented.
