Murmansk Region Head for Zoning Arctic Territories

Murmansk Governor Marina Kovtun, at the first meeting of the State Commission for the development of the Arctic has proposed a change to the system of energy pricing for the Murmansk region and zoning of marine areas.

The authorities of the Murmansk region linked the successful development of Russian oil and gas projects in the Arctic with the timely development of the Murmansk transport hub and the construction of the railway on the western shore of the Kola Bay, Interfax reported.

"The project is the integrated development of the Murmansk Transport Hub, which is implemented in our region, one hundred percent is the Arctic, because it allows in the future to extend the infrastructural capacity of the Murmansk port," - said the governor.

Meet the needs of Russia's hydrocarbon, aquatic biological resources and other types of strategic raw materials involves the development of different types of maritime activities. Functional zoning of the Russian part of the Arctic seas is currently not available, and can be a situation where one and the same piece of maritime territory will apply various business entities.

"We have to organize the use of marine space Arctic waters through planning in accordance with their purpose and the establishment of appropriate functional areas," - noted in his report Marina Kovtun.

She recalled the favorable location of Murmansk and the Kola Bay, as a reference base for projects to develop the Arctic shelf, and also spoke about the "Arctic" tourism opportunities Kola North.

"All the great popularity among skiers gets Kirov - there is a project on the construction of high-speed passenger gondola cableway to create a modern infrastructure ski resort. The fact that in the Forbes ranking ski resort Kirovsk entered the top five in Russia, says a lot, despite the fact that the project is implemented only in December last year, "- said Marina Kovtun.
