The second report from the historic MarTID survey initiative to study global maritime training practices, investment and thought is now available on the MarTID website. The findings include the following: expenditure on maritime training continues to rise for vessel owners and seafarers; new safety and environmental regulations are driving seafarers training trends; and the prospect of ship autonomy is entering the discussions on future seafarer training.
Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University, welcomed the report stating: “For all stakeholders involved in the maritime industry, especially those who manage, deliver and/or assess the training of seafarers, as well as those who benefit from the competency and optimum performance of seafarers, the outcome of the 2019 survey, the patterns they reveal and the insights they afford, should be of tremendous interest.”
"The 2019 Training Practices Report continues to track contemporary training issues, including issues regarding training operating budgets,” said Dr. Takeshi Nakazawa, Executive Director, International Association of Maritime Universities who provided the foreword to the report. “Readers of the report will benefit from training insights from a series of valuable statistical analyses based on the data collected through the 2019 MarTID survey. The findings on the perspectives of seafarers, shipping companies and training institutions, unique to this report, are an added value."
The MarTID reports are free and distributed widely on the MarTID website to reach a global audience. The surveys draw on insights from shipowners and operators, maritime education and training institutions and seafarers. The response rate in 2019 was 58% higher than the inaugural survey in 2018. In 2019, a topical question concerning current and future trends regarding ship automation and autonomy was added.
