Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society Marks Milestone Anniversary at AGM.

Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alan Yarrow, joined maritime charity, the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society to celebrate its 150th anniversary at its AGM held at the Mansion House in London.

Residents, volunteers and staff joined the charity’s board of management to mark the occasion in the very room, The Egyptian Room, the society was formed 150 years ago. During the meeting, a letter from Her Majesty the Queen was read sending good wishes to all involved with the society.

The Society was formed in 1865 to house and care for former seafarers, and their dependents; its core mission remains the same to this day. At the event, the Society was pleased to announce that current President of the Society the Earl of Inchcape would move up to fill the long term vacant post of Vice Patron of the Society as of 29th May 2015. At the same time the Society would welcome a new president, The Viscount Cobham, who has already been a trustee for 6 years.

Royal Alfred Chief Executive, Commander Brian Boxall-Hunt, said: “The 2015 AGM was a marvellous event enjoyed by residents, staff, members, and trustees of the Society. To have the Queen acknowledge Royal Alfred’s milestone of 150 years and send her wishes for the AGM is an exceptional honour.

We were able to announce significant changes to the charity including a new Vice Patron and new President, who will represent the Society as we continue achieving our charitable objects as contained in our Royal Charter. We much look forward to the next chapter in the long life of our Society, ready to meet new challenges in the next 150 years as our predecessors did in the last.”
