Singapore-headquartered Jurong Port (JP) has been awarded the Green Port Certificate, a program under the Green Port Award System (GPAS) developed by the APEC Port Services Network (APSN)

A press note from the international multipurpose port providing integrated solutions for the most complex of logistics operations said that the GPAS program is a green evaluation system for ports in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region which assesses initiatives that improve environmental sustainability within the APEC port industry.

GPAS was launched in 2016 with the objective of promoting sustainable development in port operations and related industries while providing a platform for the sharing of best practices in sustainability among ports in the APEC region.

JP was awarded for meeting a set of criteria set forth by GPAS, which includes three primary indicators namely commitment & willingness, action & implementation and efficiency & effectiveness of the green initiative, and a set of secondary indicators defined by a list of reference standards. JP, together with 6 other ports in APEC region, was one of the pioneer ports that obtained the inaugural version of this award in 2016.

Jurong Port embarked on its sustainability journey in 2011 and has since incorporated sustainability in its organisational culture and Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, said the release.

With the aim of reducing the port’s carbon footprint, energy consumption and to tap on renewable energy sources, JP systematically embarks on environmentally sustainable initiatives each year. JP is home to one of the world’s largest port-based solar energy generation facility and the world’s first ‘green’ berths.
