Katharina Stanzel promotes industry awareness and vigilance

At the Connecticut Maritime Association’s Shipping 2014 conference held March 17-19, WISTA USA President Alexandra Anagnostis, President/CEO of Total Marine Solutions, welcomed INTERTANKO’s Managing Director, Katharina Stanzel, as the keynote speaker at its ninth annual WISTA USA luncheon on March 17, kicking off the CMA’s Shipping 2014 conference. This annual luncheon was another sold-out event, and also featured recognition of Jeanne Grasso’s service as President of WISTA USA for the past five years. Grasso, partner at Blank Rome LLP, was elected to the WISTA International Executive Committee at the WISTA International Conference in Montreal in October 2013.

In her remarks, Stanzel covered a variety of topics, all relating to risk in today’s shipping environment. One of the problems she identified, was an increase in unilateral legislation coming forward. “The regulatory environment needs to be achievable and pragmatic about the role of shipping as an industry that delivers 90% of everything,” stated Stanzel. “There needs to be a general understanding of the trouble caused by regional demands. For example, how do we deal with the ballast water debacle [in the US] where we have a clash between not only the Coast Guard and EPA, but also with IMO regulation?” Stanzel further discussed solutions for the difficult issue of places of refuge and the emerging discussion about robotic shipping.
