Ernie Ellis, president of Sea-Fire Marine, recently addressed 650 attendees of the 27th Marine Insurance Seminar held at the Fort Lauderdale Mariners Club. The event gathers marine insurance agents, brokers, underwriters, surveyors, admiralty attorneys and other professionals from around the globe to learn about critical issues facing owners of private and commercial vessels.

An industry expert on marine fire detection and suppression, Ellis co-presented the session, FIRE: Hot Topic, but not the Same Old Story. He reviewed the primary purposes of a marine fire detection and suppression system: to protect life and property, and meet USCG requirements. The evolution of suppression fluids was discussed, as was the proper design of a system, and the advantages and limitations of various types.

Randy Watson concluded the presentation with a discussion of post-fire processes, including scientific-based investigation and analysis of fire and explosion incidents. Watson is a fire investigator, manager with S-E-A (Scientific Expert Analysis™), a worldwide leader in forensic examination, research and testing.

Ellis has over 25 years of experience in developing and manufacturing advanced marine safety equipment. He is an ABYC standing member on the A-4 Fire Fighting Equipment committee and member of the National Fire Protection Association.
