Six British shipping registers, which work together under the banner the ‘Red Ensign Group’ (REG), will host a shipping reception on Wednesday, September 9 in aid of global maritime welfare charity The Mission to Seafarers.
REG is made up from the United Kingdom, the Crown Dependencies (Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey) and the UK Overseas Territories (Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, St Helena and the Turks & Caicos Islands) which operate shipping registers from their jurisdiction. Any vessel registered in the UK, a Crown Dependency or UK Overseas Territory, is a "British ship" and is entitled to fly the Red Ensign flag.
This exciting fundraising event will be held at the prestigious London offices of shipping lawyers Ince and Co. It is part of the varied schedule of events happening in the City during the second London International Shipping Week, which is held every two years to showcase British maritime talent and trade. The guest list for the reception will include leading shipowners, lawyers, brokers, shipyards, finance houses, senior politicians and of course the shipping registries themselves. As well as supporting seafarers in need, the reception programme will address the underlying theme of ‘Why register with the Red Ensign Group?’ across all ship types and tonnage.
REG selected The Mission to Seafarers as their chosen charity for the reception as the work of the charity spans across many of the six British jurisdictions and those vessels registered within them.
Piers Baker, Head of Maritime Administration, States of Jersey, said, “There are approximately 1.5 million seafarers - without these seafarers there would be no sea trade and the importance of their welfare must not be neglected. Within the British Registries there are staff who are ex-seafarers and the Mission is very close to their hearts and minds.”
