Press Release
Wednesday, November 14, 2012

BIMCO will be opening its Shanghai Center office on the 25 February 2013 and in conjunction with the ceremony a unique “Senior Leadership Forum” will be held to further stimulate a mutually beneficial dialogue with the Chinese shipping community.

The President of BIMCO, Mr. Yudhishthir Khatau accompanied by members of the BIMCO Executive Committee will be hosting this important event.

According to Mr. Khatau, “The close and friendly relationship that has existed for many years between the Chinese shipping community and BIMCO, has led us to believe that it would be mutually beneficial to have an exchange of views between us in the form of a Senior Leadership Forum”. He said, “The forum aims to provide a platform for a positive exchange on China’s role in the international shipping, not only as a major ship-owning nation but also as a major charterer and what perceived role BIMCO might play in furthering the well-being of Chinese shipping.”

Torben C. Skaanild, Secretary General and CEO of BIMCO noted that “The establishment of BIMCO Shanghai Center is a milestone for BIMCO, but a natural development considering the growth in Chinese shipping and the close ties that have existed between the Chinese shipping community and BIMCO for many years”.

BIMCO’s physical presence in China will enhance communication with its Chinese members and other stakeholders and facilitate timely access to BIMCO’s service - only a local phone call away - ranging from advice on a wide spectrum of issues including operational, legal, technical, security, and educational information.

Mr. Wei Zhuang, who has been with the BIMCO Secretariat in Copenhagen for some years, has been promoted to head the new BIMCO Shanghai Center.

The event is exclusive to BIMCO members and invited guests.
