World’s Largest Electric Ferry Completes Maiden Voyage
E-ferry Ellen, the world's largest all-electric ferry, made its first commercial trip connecting the ports of Søby and Fynshav (Denmark).Switzerland-based battery system provider Leclanché SA has powered the vessel, capable of carrying approximately 30 vehicles and 200 passengers, with a capacity of 4.3MWh.Participating in this event celebrating the first scheduled ferry service between the two Danish islands were the respective mayors of the two municipalities, Ole Wej Petersen of Aerø and Erik Lauritzen of Søndeborg.E-ferry Ellen is expected to be fully operational within a few weeks.

Envirocleanse LLC, division of Charter Brokerage LLC, a BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY company, has announced the submission of an application to the US Coast Guard for Type Approval of its patented inTank Ballast Water Treatment System. DNV GL Type Approval for XPAND Battery System
U.S. manufacturer of lithium-ion cells and battery systems XALT Energy’s XPAND Battery system has been certified as acceptable for installation on all marine vessels classified by DNV GL. According to a press release from the company, XPAND Battery System has been demonstrated to comply with DNV GL rules for Classification of Ships, Offshore Units, and High Speed and Light Craft, and was therefore granted Type Approval Certificate TAE00002YC. The certification includes XALT Energy’s XMP71P-based systems, including XALT’s Battery Management System (BMS).

IMS Group Buys OceanSaver Assets
Norway’s IMS group AS announced it has signed a purchase agreement with the OceanSaver Trustee to acquire the ballast water treatment system manufacturer’s intellectual property, certificates and assets following its bankruptcy filed on September 13, 2017. OceanSaver had sold approximately 200 ballast water treatment systems and was among the first suppliers to be approved by IMO, to successfully complete the stringent test regime by the U.S. Coast Guard and to obtain a USCG type approval in December 2016.
De Nora BWTS Concludes USCG Testing
De Nora announced that it has completed shipboard testing for its BALPURE ballast water treatment system (BWTS), and intends to make its submission for United States Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval by the end of 2017. The shipboard testing of De Nora BALPURE was conducted on a US-flagged Aframax tanker operating in the west coast of the United States in the regulated waters of California and Alaska. The tanker is in normal trading and has been ballasting and deballasting with BALPURE system on a regular basis.
MOL Rolls Out Total Residual Oxidants Instrument
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced commercialization of the Total Residual Oxidants (TRO) instrument "S.sensing WS," one of the major components of the Ballast Water Management System (BWMS). TRO is developed by Kurita Water Industries with the cooperation of MOL's group company MOL Engineering Co. In addition, MOL Techno-Trade will handle sales activities for the new product.
