Cruise With Confidence: Cruise Lines Prosper Despite Troubles

Cruise Lines shrug off tragedy, bad publicity, new regulations and a weak economy to post impressive growth. In the year since the Costa Concordia tragedy, the cruise industry has seen a raft of new regulatory initiatives; in part developed in conjunction with industry associations. Harmonization of multiple regimes is the new mantra for industry stake-holders. In late December, the Florida-based Cruise Line Industry Association (CLIA) announced a tie-up which will result in one worldwide voice for the industry.

Taiwan President Honors Evergreen Founder

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou honored Evergreen Group founder Dr. Chang Yung-Fa with a posthumous commendation in recognition of his contributions to international transportation and social welfare during the memorial service today. The company's North America headquarters are in Jersey City, N.J. Taiwan's Education Minister and the Minister of Transportation and Communications also offered homage to Dr. Chang with the First-Class Professional Education Medal and First-Class Professional Transportation Medal. World's Richest Travellers Prefer Panama

According to AFP Relaxnews, Panama saw the most growth in interest among the world’s richest jetsetters for travel this winter and spring. Panama saw the most significant growth in bookings —107 per cent — compared to the previous year for the travel period between January and March of 2016, says luxury travel boutique Virtuoso. After Panama, Thailand and Switzerland round out the top three spots for highest growth in bookings. CLIA Names Muskat Trade Relations Committee Chairman

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced that Ken Muskat, executive vice president of sales, public relations, and guest services for MSC Cruises USA, has been named chairman of the CLIA Trade Relations Committee. In this role, Muskat will lead a committee of his peers and work in partnership with CLIA Vice President of Membership Charles Sylvia to provide counsel on CLIA’s travel agency and agent relations, training, professional development programs, partnerships, research and membership initiatives.

Zarmati, CEO of Costa Cruises NA, to Retire

After nearly 43 years in the cruise business, Maurice M. Zarmati is retiring as president and CEO of Costa Cruises North America, effective November 30, 2011. He will remain with the line as a senior consultant on Costa’s worldwide sales, marketing and passenger-traffic initiatives. Zarmati, 65, became president and CEO of Costa Cruises North America in March 2008. Costa Releases Details on Guest Reimbursement from Concordia Wreck

Costa Crociere announced a compensation proposal for guests that have returned home after the Costa Concordia accident on January 13. This proposal is also the result of negotiations that Costa Crociere began with the consumer associations protecting guests’ interests, and with the support of multiple tourism/travel-industry associations. In Italy, the company has already reached an agreement with the National Council of Consumers and Users, a nationally representative organization.

Viking Sea Floated Out From Drydock

Viking Ocean Cruises has announced its second ship—the 930-passenger Viking Sea —was floated out from Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, marking a major construction milestone and the first time that the new ship touches water. Viking marked the occasion with a traditional ceremony at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, where the ship is under construction. Karine Hagen, Viking’s senior vice president of product and daughter of Torstein Hagen, will be godmother to Viking Sea and will officially “name” the ship during the christening ceremony in early 2016.

Carnival UK Announces Executive Appointments

Carnival Corporation & plc announced that David Dingle has been appointed chairman of Carnival UK and David Noyes, currently executive vice president operations, has been promoted to the CEO role, with operating responsibility for the UK-based brands P&O Cruises and Cunard Line. Holland America Line Wins 8 Magellan Awards

Travel Weekly magazine announced the recipients of its 2014 Magellan Awards, and Holland America Line received eight of the prestigious honors. The line won five gold awards in the categories Restaurant Design for Canaletto Small Plates, Television Commercial for “Breathtaking Meet Impeccable,” Blog for the Holland America Blog, Direct Mail for the 2014 Winter Mariner Magazine and Advertising/Marketing Campaign for Discover HAL’s Alaska. New CEO at the Helm of Crystal Cruises

Genting Hong Kong appointed travel industry veteran Tom Wolber as President and CEO of Crystal Cruises, effective September 15. Wolber brings to the role over three decades of experience in general management, operations, newbuild construction and business development. He joins Crystal most recently from the Walt Disney Company where he served in various executive roles for 28 years, 10 of which were with Disney Cruise Line where he served as Senior Vice President of Operations. Wolber helped transform Disney Cruise Line into a global cruise line.

Holland America Line & Seabourn names Kammerer is V.P

Mark Kammerer has been named vice president, international marketing and sales for Holland America Line and Seabourn. In this role, he will be responsible for the companies’ sales offices in the U.K., the Netherlands and Australia, as well as Holland America Line and Seabourn’s growing international business. Kammerer will report to Joe Slattery, Holland America Line’s senior vice president, global marketing and sales. “Mark brings incredible knowledge and experience to this position, and his expertise supports the continued growth in our international presence,” said Slattery.

Neumann Named CEO and President of Starboard

Beth G. Neumann has joined Starboard Cruise Services as CEO and President, reporting to Starboard Chairman, Ed Brennan. Owned by renowned world leader in luxury, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Starboard is the largest and leading onboard retailer in the cruise industry. In her leadership role, Neumann will oversee Starboard’s worldwide operations, which includes 1,800 employees, working both on land and on board the ships of the company’s eight partner cruise lines. Starboard’s sister company, Onboard Media, will also report to Neumann as part of her responsibilities.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) has announced the appointment of Larry Pimentel to the newly created position of president and chief executive officer of Azamara Cruises.
