Call For Special Status For UK Seaports
A new trade campaign coalition has called on the UK Government to grant special economic status to airports and seaports in order to stimulate international investment, re-shore manufacturing and ultimately lower prices for consumers after Brexit. Port Zones UK is a new coalition of British airport and seaport operators with the aim of promoting regional growth centered on major UK transportation hubs through its proposed designation of enhanced ‘Enterprise, Development and Free Trade Zones’.
Ponstein Appointed on Port of New Orleans Board
Gov. John Bel Edwards appointed Charles H. Ponstein to the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans as the St. Bernard Parish representative on the seven-member regional board. Ponstein was sworn in during today’s monthly Board meeting and will serve a five-year term succeeding William T. Bergeron. With the Port’s acquisition of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad effective Feb. 1, 2018, Port Commissioners also serve as directors of the New Orleans Public Belt board, Ponstein will become NOPB’s newest director with this appointment.

U.S. The Canaveral Port Authority has been awarded $1 million in federal funding to bolster Port security programs and critical infrastructure. Port Canaveral is one of thirty-three U.S. ports to have been awarded direct grants by FEMA for FY‘17 which will be used for direct support of maritime security risk mitigation. “Port Canaveral is a vital gateway for commerce, tourism and trade. Last year, nearly five million cruise passengers were served and six million tons of cargo moved across our docks,” said Captain John Murray, Port CEO.

Port of Indiana Handles Record Volume
The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon set a new annual shipping record in 2015 by handling over 6.6 million tons for the first time in its 40-year history. This was a 36-percent increase over 2014 and 30 percent higher than the previous record set in 1994. In addition to the record volume, it was also the highest annual increase in total tons handled at the port. "The credit for the record volume rightfully goes to our world-class port companies, without them we would not be enjoying the success we have today," said Port Director Phil Wilzbacher.

Karachi Port Signs MoU with Chinese Port Trust
The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Guangdong Transport Department, China signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for strengthening shipping connectivity and establishing cooperation. The MoU was signed by KPT Chairman Vice Admiral Shafqat Jawed and Guangdong Transport Department Director General Zeng Zhaogeng. The signing took place when a delegation, led by Guangdong Vice Governor Liu Zhigeng visited the Karachi port. Talking on the occasion Minister Ports and Shipping said that the MOU is the first ever in KPT’s history.
