Ammonia Fuel Cells for Deep-Sea Shipping: A Key Piece of the Zero-emissions Puzzle

Interest in ammonia-powered fuel cells for the maritime sector is growing, but stakeholders have been hesitant to commit to investments in large-scale systems. Now the ShipFC project is aiming to secure a place for ammonia in the future of deep-sea shipping.The project will equip the offshore supply vessel Viking Energy, owned and operated by Eidesvik and on contract to energy major Equinor, with a 2-megawatt (MW) ammonia fuel cell, allowing it to operate for at least 3,000 hours annually on clean fuel.

First Containership Arrives at Sweden's Newest Port

Unifeeder containership SCA Tunadal on Wednesday claimed the maiden call at Sweden’s newest freight port, Stockholm Norvik Port, following the completion of a long port construction project.The container terminal is now open, both for vessel calls and for shore-based business operations at the port. The 32 hectare container terminal is run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with 52 ports in 27 countries.Nine goods in 10 arrive in Sweden by sea, and the Stockholm region accounts for half of Sweden’s entire consumption.

UHL Takes-over Nine F900 Vessels

The German shipping company United Heavy Lift (UHL)  Hamburg has taken over a modern Heavy Lift fleet of nine eco-friendly F900 newbuildings.The vessels each have a cargo capacity of 14,100 dead-weight tonnes and are capable of lifting loads of up to 900 tonnes. Being built in 2018 and 2019, most of the nine vessels have only just hit the water. They are sailing under the Portuguese flag.“Our mission is to expand our company’s position as front-runners for an eco-friendly Heavy Lift shipping industry. Gasum on an Acquisition Spree

Port of Hamburg Marketing successfully takes part in tenders for EU- and nationally funded projects, together with members and partners from science, business and administration.Focus is put on current issues of transport policy, transport and process optimization as well as modal shift actions towards more environmentally friendly modes. One of the on-going projects is the project platform BSR Access funded by the Intereg Baltic Sea Region (BSR) Program.Project platforms support cooperation among partners of existing projects and aim to increase impacts of EU-funded projects in the area.

BREAKBULK SHIPPING: Breakbulk Breaks the Mold

In the cargo shipping world, there’s the bulk sector, the container segment, and then, there is “everything else.”When it comes to ‘everything else,’ breakbulk is the cargo that resides in between, comprising much of that remainder, including forest products (lumber, baled pulp) and steel. Netherlands-based maritime transport solutions provider Royal Wagenborg said that its vessel m.v. Alaskaborg completed a special voyage from the Baltic to the Far East.The 15,750 DWT geared vessel from the Wagenborg fleet combined a bulk cargo and project cargo in both box-shaped holds. Scania Appoints Karin Rådström as EVP

Swedish manufacturer of diesel engines for marine industry Scania announced that Karin Rådström has been appointed Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing.She takes up her position on 1 March and will report to Henrik Henriksson, President and CEO.Rådström, born in 1979, joined Scania as trainee in 2004 after graduating Master of Engineering in Industrial Management at Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Since 2007, she has held various managerial positions within Scania’s sales and service organization.

Piraeus Port Signs MoU with Italian Ports

The Greek port of Piraeus signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italy’s port authorities from the cities of Venice and Chioggia.The agreement seeks to develop port services and promote increased trade flow between Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East.The MoU was signed during a meeting between the chairman and CEO of Piraeus port Fu Chengqiu and the president of the Northern Adriatic Sea Port Authority (Venice and Chioggia) Pino Musolino.The MoU envisages cooperation in improving the exchange of best practices and knowhow in port management…

Blue Water Assists Marine Group in Lock System Elements

The freight transport solutions provider Blue Water Shipping has assisted Marine Group AB, Sweden with placing three out of four lock system elements with great accuracy on board Marine Group’s barge “Carrier 16” in Copenhagen.According to Blue Water, subsequently the barge was to transport the elements to Stockholm, Sweden to form part of a major lock system. The biggest element measured 25 by 65 meters, and “Carrier 16” was adjusted for this specific project.But first of all, the four lock system elements had to be moved out of the dry dock on Refshaleøen, it said.

Kalmar to Supply Customized RMGs at DCT Gdansk

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed an agreement with Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) Gdansk to supply three electrically powered rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) with DCT specific customization. Finnish dry bulker ESL ShippingLtd, a shipping company fully owned by Aspo Group, is going to acquire all the outstanding shares of AtoB@C Shipping AB and AtoB@C Holding AB (AtoB@C) that offer shipping services. The enterprise value is EUR 30 million. The final purchase price will be mainly financed by Aspo's existing financing reserves, and approximately EUR 4.2 million will be covered by new shares issued by Aspo Plc. The transaction will require the competition authority's approval in Finland to be completed.

GRUPO ETE enabled the largest Portuguese clinker export ever, to its client Cimpor - an InterCement company – by concluding the loading of 55,902 metric tons on the bulk carrier Vinayak, bound for Ghana.This export operation, completed in a record time, was entirely carried out on the Tagus river. The clinker was transported in barges pushed by tugboats down the river, from Cimpor’s Alhandra plant terminal, and loaded by floating cranes into the M/V Vinayak anchored midstream in the port of Lisbon.

Damen Stock Tugs Shipped to Rotterdam

Shipbuilder Damen said its latest transport of newbuild vessels has arrived in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The multiple vessel shipment carried on board the SAL Heavy Lift vessel MV Lone comprises various Damen Tugs and one Multi Cat that have been constructed at Damen’s yards in Vietnam. Consisting of two Stan Tugs 2608, three ASD Tugs 2411, four ASD Tugs 2810, two ASD Tugs 3212 and a Multi Cat 1908, the shipment is a strategic positioning of built-for-stock vessels in Europe, the shipbuilder said.
