Water Outflow on Seaway Now Above 10,400 CMS

After a slow start due to ice conditions, St. Lawrence Seaway cargo surged in May fueled by grain and iron ore exports and shipments of road salt. Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Shipping: We need Icebreakers

The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence shipping industry is calling for at least five new icebreakers to be part of the federal government’s recent announcement of $15.7 billion for Canadian Coast Guard fleet renewal.Chamber of Marine Commerce President Bruce Burrows will be in attendance as the Coast Guard dedicates the Captain Molly Kool into service at its home port of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Kinder Morgan quits Crude Export Venture

Kinder Morgan Inc has dropped out of a recently proposed U.S. Gulf Coast deepwater crude export venture, the project's leader Enbridge Inc said on Monday.The $800 million project, known as Texas COLT, is one of eight similar projects proposing facilities that would move U.S. shale to overseas markets by loading supertankers able to carry up to 2 million barrels apiece.Pipeline operators Enbridge and Kinder Morgan disclosed plans to build an crude export terminal off Freeport, Texas, in January, and filed permit applications with the U.S. Maritime Administration.

2019 Shipping Season to Open for Duluth

Last night’s arrival of United States Coast Guard Cutters Alder and Mackinaw signaled that the 2019 commercial shipping season is soon to commence for the Port of Duluth-Superior and the entire region.The Alder and Mackinaw made their way across Lake Superior from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, opening a 100-foot lane in the ice that will be widened soon by Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel Risley in support of breakout efforts that will also include local tugs from the Great Lakes Towing Company and Heritage Marine.

Duluth Seaway Port Authority Welcomes Hron

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has announced that Grand Rapids native Jayson Hron has been named Director of Communications and Marketing. He returns to Minnesota to join the leadership team effective February 1, 2019.Hron (pronounced ‘RŌHN’), brings an extensive background to the position, having served in a variety of public relations, copywriting, media relations, brand management and marketing capacities. Since 2013, Hron has been a communications manager for USA Hockey in Colorado Springs, Colo.

New Commissioner for Duluth Seaway Port Authority Board

Commissioner Michael “Mike” Jugovich was appointed by the St. Louis County (SLC) Board to complete the remaining term of former Commissioner Pete Stauber on the Duluth Seaway Port Authority Board, effective January 8, 2019.Jugovich has held many positions over the years. He is a retiree of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 2705, Hibbing Taconite Company. He finished his career as an equipment and warehouse manager in the agglomerating department. In 2000, Jugovich was elected to the Chisholm City Council, serving six years before being elected mayor in 2006.

Seaway Activity Exceeds 40 Million Tonnes in 2018

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) has announced that tonnage on the waterway during the 2018 navigation season totaled 40.9 million tonnes. U.S. Ports, Seaway Shipping Reporting Strong Finish to 2018 Season

The St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes ports are reporting strong growth in November cargo volumes that is expected to carry through in the final weeks of the 2018 season. Overall cargo volumes through the St. Lawrence Seaway from March 29 to November 30 topped 36 million metric tons, up 5.3 per cent over the same period in 2017. Grain exports and road salt were highlights of activity in November. Seaway salt shipments are ahead of last year’s volumes, totaling 2.2 million metric tons up to the end of November.Year-to-date U.S.

St. Lawrence Seaway Traffic: A Busy October

St. Lawrence Seaway shipping had its second busiest month of the season in October, fueled by increases in shipments of grain, salt and construction materials.Overall cargo shipments via the St. Lawrence Seaway (from March 29 to October 31) totaled 30.5 million metric tons, up four per cent over the same period in 2017.The increase in construction materials, like cement and clinker shipments which are up 20 per cent, can partly be attributed to cement moving into terminals in Ste.

Wärtsilä’s Develops Lock Entry Assist System

Wärtsilä said it has developed a lock entry assist system that will facilitate a vessel’s approach and entrance into waterway locks. The development work has been carried out in cooperation with the Canada-based CSL Group. The initial deployment of the technology will be on board the ‘CSL St Laurent’, a 22,600 gross tonnage Trillium class bulk carrier owned by CSL. The ship operates on the waterways of the St Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes.The Wärtsilä system comes in response to the increasing size of vessels operating on these waters.

St. Lawrence Seaway Workers Ratify Contract

Port of Duluth-Superior Generates $1.4 bln and 8,000 Jobs

The Port of Duluth-Superior generated $1.4 billion in economic activity and supported 7,881 jobs last year. Handling 35 million short tons of cargo generated over $504 million in total wages, salaries and purchases of goods and services in the regional economy. Subsea 7 Awarded Substantial Contract

Norwegian subsea services provider Subsea 7 announced the award of a substantial offshore Conventional contract. Subsea 7 defines a substantial contract as being between USD 150 million and USD 300 million.In a press release, the company said that the offshore execution is planned for 2019 and 2020. No further details are disclosed at this time due to contractual obligations. Early this month, Subsea 7 announced the award of a sizeable contract by Nexen as part of the Buzzard Phase 2 Project, located approximately 55 kilometres off the north-east coast of Scotland.

St. Lawrence Seaway traffic remained steady during the month of July, with year-to-date total cargo shipments of 16.5 million metric tons. Strong July Across Great Lakes Gets Seaway Tonnage

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence shipping continues to bounce back after a slow start. With strong tonnage numbers in July, particularly shipments of U.S. grain, liquid bulk and project cargo, the 2018 shipping season is right on par with the healthy statistics posted last year.Overall cargo shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway between March 29 and July 31 totaled 16.5 million metric tons. Areas of strength included U.S. grain shipments totaling 888,000 metric tons, up 32 percent over last year. Liquid bulk shipments totaled 2.3 million metric tons, an increase of 25 percent.

Analysis: Government Proposal 'Ill-informed' on Maritime Matters

On June 22, 2018, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a federal government reorganization proposal entitled “Delivering Government Solutions in the 21st Century”. The 132-page document is subtitled ‘Reform Plan and Reorganization Recommendations’. I have not read the entire report, but I have examined those portions that relate to maritime issues. I find those portions to be uniformly ill-advised.Associate Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. once wrote: “A page of history is worth a volume of logic.”  The authors of this proposal should brush up on their history.
