China’s increased use of scrap metal for its production of crude steel is fundamentally critical to the dry bulk shipping industry. Mostly Capesize ships are impacted by this, way beyond the temporary iron ore export disruptions in Brazil and Australia.Chinese steel production grew by a massive 12.6 million tonnes (+9.2%) in the first two months on 2019 as estimated by China Iron and Steel Association (CISA).

South Asian Shipbreaking Workers Assert Rights
In Chittagong, Bangladesh, on the International Labour Day of 1 May, the Platform member organisation YPSA brought together shipbreaking workers for a demonstration to claim their right for a healthy and safe workplace. OSHE, another Platform member, and YPSA also organised demonstrations on the World Day for Health at Work, on 28 April. Concerns related to especially the vulnerability of young workers in hazardous occupations such as shipbreaking were raised, and the call for safe working conditions was joined by prominent trade union representatives.
Port Profile: New Haven, Connecticut
Connecticut’s largest and most diverse deepwater port complex, the Port of New Haven, moved more than 10 million tons in 2016, ranking the port 53rd in the U.S. in terms of cargo volume. Considered the busiest port between New York and Boston, the port of New Haven is a crucial part of Connecticut’s maritime economy. With seven privately-owned and operated terminals, New Haven is the gateway to New England and the primary point of entry for much of Connecticut’s heating oil and petroleum products.
Rotterdam Port Throughput Slips
Compared to the excellent first three quarters of 2015 (+5.4%), cargo throughput in the same period this year fell by 1.9%. The decrease was particularly strong in coal and iron ore. Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority: “Each of the different sectors in the port has its own dynamic. The 1.9% decrease is consequently the sum of a number of different developments. Last year, throughput in the port increased by 4.9%, to 466 million tonnes. Castelein: “Throughput figures only tell part of the story. Throughput in liquid bulk fell by 0.4%, to 160.0 million tonnes.
Owensboro Terminal Opts for Green Material Handler
When SENNEBOGEN material handlers became available in America, Bob Childress was one of the first to put a green machine into service on the Ohio River. Now, he is one of the latest SENNEBOGEN purchasers, too. “I bought one of the first SENNEBOGEN 825 M units from Brandeis Machinery and Supply (the SENNEBOGEN dealer in this area) for Lanham River Terminal,” Childress recalls. Childress recently transferred to Yellow Banks from Kinder Morgan’s nearby Owensboro terminal. Yellow Banks’ facilities include 50,000 sq. ft.
Little Rock Port Authority Reports September Shipping
Total barge tonnage through the Port of Little Rock in September was 52,000 net tons. Dock activities have slowed slightly; however they continue to compare favorably to calendar year 2015. Logistic Services, Inc. has handled 383 barges during the nine months of 2016 year and 578,000 net tons of various commodities have moved across the docks at the Port of Little Rock. Dock activities continue to compare favorably to calendar year 2015 as Logistic Services, Inc. has handled 347 barges during the first half of 2016 year and 560,000 net tons of various commodities have moved across the docks at the Port of Little Rock. Break bulk commodities accounted for just over 50% of the total river tonnage for August. Cargoes handled across the docks included potash, rock, wetcake, bauxite, granite fines, wire rod coils, scrap metal, pipe and steel coils.

On Friday, June 24, 2016, I voted to allow the Port Operations and Safety Discussion Agreement to go into effect pursuant to an expedited review process. The agreement was filed by OCEMA and on behalf of the ports of Boston, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Houston. The initial filing of this agreement by OCEMA contained language that was overly broad, sweeping in nature and indefinite in time.

EMR Invests £3m in Port of Tilbury
EMR, one of the world’s largest metal recycling companies has made a significant commitment to remaining in its existing Tilbury Dock facility. Not only has it just signed a new 25 year lease with the Port of Tilbury, it will be upgrading its facilities and investing around £3m in improved ship loading equipment. The site plays an important role in EMR’s activities in the South East of England. It acts as an export hub for the company’s numerous depots around London and handles over 1 million tonnes of UK-produced scrap metal, mainly iron and steel, every year.

The 175 million GT, ‘A’ rated North P&I Club has published a major new guide for the international shipping industry on how to reduce losses when carrying bulk cargoes by sea. The 280-page Bulk Cargoes: A Guide to Good Practice adds to North’s comprehensive portfolio of guidance provided about different cargo types and is the first to be made available in both print and e-book formats. Cleveland wants to be Midwest Hub for Shipping to Europe
Because of demand, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority (CCPA) is doubling the frequency of its service between Port of Cleveland and the Port of Antwerp this year. A report in AP says, so far this shipping season, not only have the number of calls increased, but so has the amount of cargo. It has tripled since last year. It was a novel concept when the CCPA came up with the idea last year. Local businesses could have their products loaded on a ship in the Port of Cleveland and send them directly to Europe. It has been smooth sailing for the Cleveland-Europe Express (CEE).

Somewhere nearby, the shell of a wrecked electrical transformer lies on its side underneath the pole where it had been fixed 20 feet off the ground. The culprit is an unusual one: A vandal who is selling the toxic oil, drawn from the transformer, to chefs who use it for frying food in roadside stalls. Five liters of the viscous, PCB-laden liquid sells for $60. It looks like cooking oil, but lasts much longer, users say.

Iron Ore Carriers Head for Port of Long Beach
Iron ore exports start up at Long Beach: Western U.S. mines supply the raw material for shipment to Asia. Officials gathered dockside to celebrate the exporting of iron ore from the Port of Long Beach – a promising new line of business developed by SA Recycling, a longtime exporter of scrap metal. SA Recycling is working with CML Metals Corp. to send iron ore from mines in Utah, California, Arizona and Nevada to meet the growing demand for raw materials in Asia’s booming steel industry. The iron ore exports, which started up this spring, are the first in 40 years from the Port.

Shipbreaking Laws to be Tightened by European Union
The European Commission has proposed new rules to ensure that European ships are only recycled in facilities that are safe for workers and environmentally sound. More than 1000 large old commercial ships, such as tankers and container vessels, are recycled for their scrap metal every year, but many European ships end up in substandard facilities on the tidal beaches of South Asia. These facilities mostly lack the environmental protection and safety measures needed to manage the hazardous materials contained in end-of-life ships.
Heaving Line Warning
In the past it was not uncommon for seafarers to weight monkey’s fists fitted to the end of heaving lines with pieces of scrap metal or sand, or to attach a heavy item such as a shackle, so that the line would travel a greater distance when thrown. This practice is no longer acceptable as it increases the risk of serious injury if a linesman, shore worker or a crewmember aboard a tug or mooring boat is struck by such an object during mooring operations, or if the weighted end hits a member of the vessel’s mooring party when the heaving line is thrown back.

Offshore Activity Spurs Scottish Harbour Growth
Aberdeen Harbour records significant North Sea energy sector traffic increase in first half 2012. Continued growth in the oil and gas sector was reflected in the increase in support vessels that used the port over the first six months of the year – up nine per cent from 2,580 in 2011 to 2,814 in 2012 – a further demonstration of the significant role the harbour plays within the energy industry and the benefits it provides to both Scotland and the UK. The half-year figures detail increases in traffic with both vessel numbers and tonnage on the rise.
