Intelsat Appoints Jacques Kerrest as CFO

Satellite services provider Intelsat S.A. announced that Jacques Kerrest will join the company as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, reporting to Intelsat’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Spengler. Kerrest will be responsible for the leadership of Intelsat’s financial operations, including capital markets, accounting, treasury, financial planning, investor relations and corporate development. He will be a member of the company’s Management Committee and is expected to begin his duties on February 1. Kerrest joins Intelsat from DPC Data Inc.

BIG DATA: First Intelsat EpicNG Satellite Launched

The launch yesterday of  the Intelsat 29e, the first of the Intelsat EpicNG high throughput satellites, promises to usher in a new era of "Big Data" in the maritime sector, among others. The satellite was launched from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle. Manufactured by Boeing and equipped with advanced digital payload, Intelsat 29e will bring high throughput capacity in both C- and Ku-band to North and Latin America and the North Atlantic region. Intelsat 29e will be placed into service at 310° East, where it replaces Intelsat 1R.

EASTMED to Add VSAT on 20 Tankers and Bulkers

Greece-based Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Limited (EASTMED), a shipping operator servicing the energy, industrial and agricultural sectors, has chosen to install Marlink’s global VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) communication solution with L-band back-up on 20 tankers and bulkers. EASTMED aims to achieve greater operational efficiency to support its clients with cost efficient transportation in a safe environment. The VSAT solution will be completed with the full SkyFile suite to provide EASTMED crew with high-level Internet access and cost-effective communication.

EMC: U.S. Patent for MEO SatCom Power Booster

EMC earned recognition from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. PTO) with its latest patent - US 9,130,644 B2 - for a power booster that improves efficiency and performance of connectivity links with Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite networks operating in the Ka- and Ku-band frequency ranges. “We developed this MEO Booster to manage the seamless switchover between MEO satellites as they move across the sky from horizon to horizon,” said Federico Fawzi, vice president of advanced engineering, EMC.

Satellite Services Donated for Nepal Relief Efforts

April 25's 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal and subsequent aftershocks have disrupted last mile communications to communities with millions of people needing medical and other relief support. Intelsat has donated its satellite services to two organizations making a difference in the region: the American Red Cross working in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and Team Rubicon.
