P&O Ferrymasters Launches New Link Turkey

MSC Expands Intermodal Shipping at Trieste

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. is enhancing intermodal connections via the port of Trieste, Italy, to improve transit times for shippers moving cargo between Asia, the Mediterranean and Europe. The new “MSC Graz-Trieste Runner” shuttle train, operated together with Cargo Center Graz, connects Trieste with Werndorf, Austria, once a week. The service is the first direct connection between Trieste and Werndorf and its schedule is coordinated with MSC’s Far East Phoenix ocean-liner service to ensure optimal timing for intercontinental cargo delivery.

New Train Connection between Kiel and Trieste

The port of Kiel is extending its services in combined traffic with a new direct train connection between Kiel and the Adriatic port of Trieste in Northern Italy. “This is a milestone for Kiel as a logistics hub,” said Dr. Dirk Claus, Managing Director at PORT OF KIEL. Panama Canal Expansion: More Lock Gates Arrive

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) informs that the second shipment of four rolling gates for the Third Set of Locks to the waterway's Atlantic side has arrived from the Port of Trieste, Italy, on board the semi-submersible vessel 'STX Sun Rise'. “This is another milestone as it completes half of the 16 gates that will be used in the new locks”, said the administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, Jorge Luis Quijano. Differing from the first shipment, these gates have two different dimensions, according to their final position in the lock chambers.

Panama Canal Expansion Lock Gates Arrive

In a major milestone for the Panama Canal Expansion Program, the first four gates for the new locks have arrived from the port of Trieste, Italy to the waterway's Atlantic side on board the semi-submersible vessel 'STX Sun Rise'. "This is an exciting moment for the Panama Canal - the arrival of the new gates marks a great progress for this engineering project," Panama Canal Administrator Jorge L. Quijano said. Built by subcontractor Cimolai SpA, the first four gates are 57.6 m long, 10 m wide and 30.19 m high, and weigh an average of 3,100 tons.

INTERTANKO Objects to Port of Trieste Fines

The Port of Trieste has advised that, with effect from March 3 2010, vessels using fuels with a sulphur content exceeding 0.1% by mass (in contravention of EU Directive 2005/33/EC) will be prosecuted with fine of between Euros 15,000 and 150,000 (usually 30,000 for the first offence). Exemption to the law will not be granted anymore and all eventual special authorizations issued in the past are cancelled, it states. INTERTANKO said that this means ship and port safety may be sacrificed purely in order to generate local harbor funds.
