Maiden Call by Marella at Port of Kiel
On Tuesday morning (16th July) the cruise ship “Marella Explorer” berthed in the port of Kiel with 2,000 mostly anglophone passengers on-board. The vessel follows an itinerary of 14 days leading it all across the Baltic Sea. Port of Kiel: More than 2.2 mln Passengers This Year
The economic importance of nautical tourism for Schleswig-Holstein is continuing to increase. More than 2.2 million passengers are expected in the port of Kiel alone this year, forecasting record numbers like 600,000 cruise passengers and 1.6 million ferry travelers.Last year, passengers generated a turnover of about 68 million Euros in Kiel. The consumer spending of the port’s ferry passengers amounts to more than 53 million Euros. These are complemented by another 15 million Euros spent by cruise passengers and the crews.
Port of Kiel: Passenger Volume Up, Cargo Down
More than 2.2 million passengers and again over 7 million cargo tons handledKiel continues to pursue its growth course in passenger traffic posting a 4.2 % increase with 2.2 million travelers. At the same time, the port’s cargo sector was unable to match the top results of the reference period (2017: 7.4 million tons, +14.3 %). The handling performance decreased by 3.5 % to 7.15 tons of cargo in 2018. In order to further improve the port’s infrastructure, investment activities have accelerated once again.
Color Line Expands Oslo-Kiel Freight Route
The Norwegian shipping company Color Line said that its newly purchased ro-ro ship M/S Color Carrier sailed for the first time from Hjortneskaia in Oslo to Kiel in Germany.Color Line can transport approx. 80,000 trailers annually on this stretch. This corresponds to a continuous string of trailers from Oslo to Tromsø in the far north of Norway."This initiative is an important contribution to strengthening the environmentally friendly sea route that represents a collective solution for the transport of goods," said CEO Trond Kleivdal.

Port of Kiel: Ostuferhafen Access Area Restructured
The Port of Kiel has begun the partial demolition of a former grain storage facility as part of a plan to completely restructure the access area to the Ostuferhafen. The demolition along with the integration of adjacent areas will free up 2.8 hectares in the port access area on which expanded hard standing space can be created for trucks, trailers and cars. The first of four visits to Kiel this season by the British shipping company Saga Cruises began early Thursday with the arrival on the Kiel Fiord of the Saga Sapphire with 640 English-speaking passengers on board. Season’s Biggest Cruise Ship Berths at Ostseekai
The biggest cruise ship of this year’s summer season arrived in the port of Kiel on Saturday April 28th at the end of a journey across the Atlantic. The 139,000 GT and 333 m long “MSC Preziosa” arrived in the Kiel Fiord in the early morning and was welcomed with a water fountain tribute from one of the port’s tugs and escorted to her berth at the Ostseekai Cruise Ship Terminal.
