Chiquita Renews Contract with the Port of Hueneme
Chiquita sticks with Hueneme, signing a long-term contract with the Port. The new contract builds on their thriving business relationship which began in 2004.Chiquita imports enough bananas to encompass the globe six times every year through the Port of Hueneme. These bananas then head to their distribution center in downtown Oxnard. Port of Hueneme Breaks Cargo Record
Cargo imports and exports hit an all-time high at the Port of Hueneme with 1.6 million tons of cargo moving through the Port. This represents an 8.1% increase over last year’s performance of 1.48 million cargo tons. The previous cargo record was set in FY2015 with 1.56 million cargo tons.This new cargo record resulted from increases in nearly all areas of cargo imports and exports. Port of Hueneme Jobs Impact Up 25%
The Port of Hueneme realized record economic growth with indirect, direct, induced and related jobs up 25 percent according to a new Economic Assessment prepared by Martin Associates, a firm specializing in economic analysis for the U.S. port industry. The Report indicates that numbers soared from 10,226 jobs in 2012 to 13,632 jobs in 2015, underscoring the importance of the Port as a major catalyst in Ventura County and the state of California economies. “The success of the Port impacts the success of the entire region,” said Oxnard Harbor District Commission President Dr. Manuel Lopez.

Kristin Decas, port director and CEO of Southern California’s Port of Hueneme and chairwoman of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), has been chosen to speak at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Maritime Day ceremony on May 21. Rooney to Lead Port of Hueneme Board
The Port of Hueneme Board of Commissioners voted in officers for 2014 at their first meeting of the year held January 13, 2014. Senior Commission member and former five-time President Jess Herrera nominated Commissioner Mary Anne Rooney to take the helm as president. Rooney’s nomination received unanimous Board support and for the first time in the Port’s 77 year history a woman takes the office of Board President. Acting Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen met today with Port of Hueneme officials and Port customers for an industry stakeholder meeting and tour of the Port of Hueneme and Navy Base Ventura County. BMW, Global Auto Processing Services, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Chiquita, Del Monte, Yara, the ILWU and Port Stevedores participated in a strategic round table discussion focusing on partnership opportunities, marine highway trade and Port priorities moving forward. “America’s Ports truly are our economic gateway,” said Acting Maritime Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen.
Port of Hueneme Receives EPA Grant
Port staff received news that the Port of Hueneme was among the awardees to receive funds through the EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). The funds will be used to complete an enhanced phase II to the Port’s existing Shore Power Project that will allow additional vessels to simultaneously connect to the Port’s Shore Power system. Following passage of AB 32 by the state assembly, programs were put in place to allow ships at berth in California ports to turn off their more polluting marine engines dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
AAPA Elects Quinn as Chairman of the Board
The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) elected Jim Quinn, president and CEO of New Brunswick, Canada’s Port Saint John, to serve as the international trade association’s chairman of the board for the 2015-16 activity year.
