NYK Acquires Gazocean

On October 22, NYK signed a sales and purchase agreement with France's Total acquiring all of the company’s shares in the ship management company, Gazocean. Based in Marseille, France, and responsible for the management of six LNG carriers, Gazocean is now a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK. The move is designed to strengthen NYK’s ship-management system and expand the company’s LNG transportation business in France. E-money Platform MarCoPay Accredited by Bank

On December 10, MarCoPay Inc. has obtained a certificate of registration from Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the central bank of the Philippines, allowing the company to operate as an electronic money issuer.In July 2019, NYK and Philippine-owned business group Transnational Diversified Group (TDG) announced the development of the new fintech platform MarCoPay. Now certified by BSP, it is well on its way to meet its target launch date for NYK operated vessels in early 2020.

NYK Group to Build New Heavy-lift Vessels

NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., an NYK Group company and the only shipping company that owns and operates heavy-lift ships in Japan, signed a contract with Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co. Ltd., which is part of the China Merchants Group, to build a pair of heavy-lift vessels. The ships will be equipped with a pair of 400-ton cranes and be able to lift up to 800 tons of heavy cargo. The hold will be about 95 meters in length at its maximum without any bulkheads, i.e., upright walls within the hold.

Asuka II, operated by NYK Cruises Co. Ltd., will undergo a 45-day makeover at the Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard in Singapore from the middle of January 2020. Asuka II is the nation’s largest cruise ship flying the Japanese flag (tonnage: 50,142 GT; capacity: 872 passengers).Features to be added during the dry dock include a large open-air bath, Western-style rooms featuring traditional Japanese-style tatami-mat sleeping areas, and a reading lounge where guests can enjoy a little quite time with books, smart devices, and computers.

Naming Ceremony for New LNG Carrier

On May 14, a naming ceremony was held at the Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that NYK and JERA Co. will jointly own. The ceremony was attended by Satoshi Onoda, president of JERA Co. New Partners in Autonomous Shipping Alliance
