After 10 years at the helm, Harry Bolton handed over command of the Training Ship Golden Bear Wednesday at California State University Maritime Academy.Bolton, a 1978 graduate of the Academy, returned to Cal Maritime on May 1, 2008 after a 30-year career with American Maritime Officers. Balaken Restarts Operation after Overhaul
The overhaul of the ferry vessel “Balaken”, belonging to the Transport Feet of Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company, is completed. The ship successfully passed the sea trials. Major repairs of steering and auxiliary equipment, engine mechanisms, various pumps, main and auxiliary engines of the vessel were completed. Some parts are replaced with new ones. The cleaning and painting of the underwater and surface of the ferry was done. All necessary works on adjustment, repair and checking of automation systems, navigation equipment and electrical parts of the vessel were also finished.
Campaign Focuses on Safety of Navigation
The two major Port State Control regimes – Paris MoU and Tokyo MoU – will focus especially on navigational safety in a so-called Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) is being taken place from 1 September until 30 November 2017, said Danish Maritime Authority. The inspection campaign (CIC) will be carried out over a period of three months as part of routine Port State Control inspections. Thus, all Danish ships that are routinely inspected under the Tokyo MoU and Paris MoU should expect to be covered by the campaign.
Tokyo, Paris MOUs Launch Navigation Safety Push
The Maritime Authorities of the Tokyo and the Paris Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control will launch a joint Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on safety of navigation. The aim of the CIC is to check compliance with the applicable requirements of the SOLAS Convention, the overall status of the vessel’s navigation safety, and the competency of crew involved in navigation operations. This inspection campaign will be held for three months, commencing from September 1, 2017 and ending November 30, 2017.

Reuter reports that the Philippines has released a North Korean freighter it had seized. The North Korean freighter was covered by harsher United Nations' sanctions against Pyongyang over its nuclear program. The 6,830 deadweight tonne (dwt) cargo ship M/V Jin Teng was one of the first sanctioned North Korean ships to enter a foreign port since the tightened sanctions were passed unanimously by the U.N. Bringing Peace and Quiet to the Bridge

SAR Services Overwhelmed, Under Resourced
Search and rescue (SAR) authorities and organizations in developing nations are under resourced and overwhelmed because of the size of the rivers, lakes and coastlines they have to monitor. This is one of the main conclusions from a report on ferry accidents commissioned by the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) – the UK based charity – presented at the World Maritime Rescue Congress (WMRC) in Bremerhaven yesterday and coinciding with the ferry disaster on the Yangtze River in China, one of the countries featured in the study.
Two Scandlines Ferries Take Shape
The completion of the two new vessels, M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen, at the Danish shipyard FAYARD is progressing according to plan. It is expected that the two new passenger ferries can be put into operation on the Rostock-Gedser route in the second half of 2015. The vessels start to resemble what they are supposed to be, two modern traffic machines with lots of light, air and space. During the last months, the vessels have been on a strict diet to reduce the weight, and the new bridge has recently been installed on the first vessel, M/V Berlin.
OSV Master Fined Following Wind Turbine Allision
The master of a wind farm support boat has been made to pay £3,000 in fines and costs after breaching maritime collision regulations, informs the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Geoffrey Whinfrey was in charge of the Island Panther when it collided with a wind turbine in the Sheringham Shoal wind farm on 21 November 2012. Whinfrey had been requested by the wind farm operator - Scira Offshore Energy Ltd - that the Island Panther take off duty employees ashore due to the worsening weather conditions. It was dark and the wind was gusting up to 45mph, with driving rain and rough seas.

New Tug Guidelines from Bureau Veritas
International classification society Bureau Veritas has worked closely with the towing industry to develop a set of Guidelines for Design, Construction and Operation of Tugs. The Guidance Note provides safety rules for tugs in an area of marine safety where there are many vessels not covered by international conventions, with no established framework. Synapsis INS for Two New Wind Farm Service Vessels
The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz, says that together with its exclusive Norwegian distributor Syberg AS, it has been awarded a contract for the supply of an advanced Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to two new state-of-the-art wind farm service vessels. Raytheon explains that the Norwegian shipyard, Havyard Ship Technology in Leirvik / Sogn, is designing and building the new vessels which have to meet the highest demands on design, safety, efficiency and performance.

Massive Italian Shipborne Navigation Contract for Transas
Transas Marine has won the Italian tender of "Consorzio degli armatori del mediterraneo" for supply of navigation equipment for 64 vessels. "Consorzio degli armatori del mediterraneo" is the Italian Shipowners Research Consortium which consists of 6 shipowners (Augusta Due, Marnavi, L.G.R. di Navigazione, Gestioni Armatoriali, Elbana di Navigazione, Perseveranza). Spoof is defined as “a hoax or swindle.” In the world of electronic networks, a spoofing attack is a situation in which one program successfully masquerades as another by falsifying data and thereby gaining an improper advantage. We have all heard of, and possibly fallen victim to, fraudulent card readers (often inserted on self-service fuel pumps). The fraudulent card readers copy security information from the credit card, which is then used to clone an illegitimate credit card and incur improper charges on the victim’s credit card account.
