Breakthrough Capability Keeps Subs, Ships Safe

Interactive software that can dramatically cut the time it takes to plan safe submarine missions is crossing over to the surface fleet and is being installed this month on the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), officials announced Dec. 16. Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the technology adds speed and precision the process of finding the best routes around hazards in waterways around the world. Sailors spend days or even weeks planning a successful navigation route for a mission.

Roger Easton, Father of GPS, Dies at 93

Roger Lee Easton, Sr., visionary, inventor and pioneer of modern day navigation passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his Wheelock Terrace residence located in Hanover, New Hampshire. Born April 30, 1921, in North Craftsbury, Vt., to Frank Birch Easton, Sr. and Della (Donnocker) Easton, he was raised in Craftsbury Common and graduated from the Craftsbury Academy in 1939. He was a member of the class of 1943 at Middlebury College. After graduation he attended the University of Michigan for one semester where he met his wife Barbara. In 1943 Easton began work as a physicist at the U.S.

Scientists Strive to Make Fuel from Seawater

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is developing the chemistry for producing jet fuel from renewable resources. Refueling U.S. Navy vessels, at sea and underway, is a costly endeavor in terms of logistics, time, fiscal constraints and threats to national security and sailors at sea. In Fiscal Year 2011, the U.S. Navy Military Sea Lift Command, the primary supplier of fuel and oil to the U.S. Navy fleet, delivered nearly 600 million gallons of fuel to Navy vessels underway, operating 15 fleet replenishment oilers around the globe.

1923 - Commissioning of Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. 1926 - Distinguished Flying Cross authorized by Congress. 1937 - Amelia Earhart disappears in Pacific. Navy conducts extensive unsuccessful search. 1945 - USS Barb (SS 220) bombards Japanese installations on Kaihyo Island, Japan; first successful use of rockets against shore positions. 1946 - Establishment of VX-3 to evaluate adaptability of helicopters to naval purposes. 1950 - USS Juneau (CLAA 119) and two British ships sink five of six attacking North Korean torpedo boats and gunboats.

ONR: From Science Fiction to Science Fact

As Director of Innovation, Dr. Larry Schuette is one of three portfolio directors at the Office of Naval Research (ONR). His counterparts are the director of research (discovery and invention) and director of transition. The Office of Innovation promotes, fosters, and develops innovative science, technology, processes and policies that support the Department of the Navy. “I manage the ‘leap ahead’ portfolio here at the Office of Naval Research,” he says. Basic Approval, Bal Pure Ballast Water Treatment

The Bal Pure ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora received basic approval from the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 60th session, March 22-26, 2010. As a result, Severn Trent De Nora has submitted its dossier for final approval of the system at an upcoming MEPC session. Severn Trent De Nora is also scheduled to conduct shipboard testing of the Bal Pure system May through November 2010 on the California Maritime Academy training ship, the T.S. Golden Bear. The T.S.
