General Dynamics NASSCO Builds Second Matson Containership

General Dynamics NASSCO has started construction on the second ship in a two-ship series of Kanaloa-class containerships for Matson Navigation Company, Inc. Construction of Matsonia began with a ceremonial first cut of steel at NASSCO's San Diego shipyard where the first ship in the series, Lurline, is 15 percent complete. Both ships will transport containers, automobiles and rolling stock between the West Coast of the United States and Hawaii. Green Shipping: Cargo Carriers Clutch at Compliance

LNG looms as the bridge to a ‘zero emissions’ future for shipping. The advent of industry wide tightening of allowable sulfur emissions is getting nearer. Suddenly, with the deadline now just one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. The 0.1 percent sulfur cap, already in effect since 2015 in coastal Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in Europe and North America, will remain.

Matson Increases Neighbor Island Barge Capacity

Matson, Inc. said its subsidiary Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has replaced one of its three barges dedicated to serving Hawaii's neighbor island ports with a newer, larger barge that will improve service levels. The container barge Columbia, to be renamed Mauna Loa in honor of the barge it replaces, is now Matson's largest barge. At 360 feet long, with a beam (width) of 100 feet and cargo carrying capacity of 12,600 tons or 500 TEU, it is 12 feet longer and 40 feet wider than the barge it replaces, with the capacity to carry 180 more TEU or nearly 8,000 tons more cargo.

Matson to Upgrade Honolulu Terminal

Matson Navigation Company, a leading U.S. carrier in the Pacific, has signed contracts with Paceco Corporation for the purchase of three new 65 long-ton capacity cranes and modifications to upgrade three existing cranes at its Sand Island Terminal in Honolulu Harbor. The investments are part of a broader $60 million terminal expansion and modernization program Matson is undertaking to prepare its operational hub in Hawaii for the arrival of four new ships the company has on order with a combined value of approximately $930 million and deliveries starting next year.

SUNY Maritime Scholarship Dinner Honors Five

For years, SUNY Maritime College’s annual Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner has helped to raise support to fund student scholarships. This year, in addition to setting an attendance record, it also set a record for donations. Jim Lawrence, chairman of Marine Money International and board member of Seamen’s Church Institute, welcomed the 650 alumni, parents and friends. The Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner raised $780,000, contributions that go directly to help students fund their studies. “These scholarships help the college recruit the best and brightest students to Maritime College,” said Rear Adm.

Frederick J. Harris, recently retired president of General Dynamics NASSCO and Bath Iron Works shipyards, has joined the operating executive board (OEB) of private equity firm J.F. Lehman & Company. The OEB is a group of industry and government executives with significant experience in the firm’s target industries. Through key relationships and sector-specific knowledge, OEB members contribute to sourcing and evaluating transactions, advising on portfolio company strategy and recruiting senior level portfolio company management.

Fred Harris to Retire

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) said that in the wake the retirement of Frederick J. Harris  effective January 1, 2017, Dirk A. Lesko will be a vice president of the corporation and appointed as president of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, and Kevin M. Graney will be a vice president of the corporation and appointed as president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “Dirk and Kevin are seasoned leaders with proven track records of managing complex shipbuilding projects and driving continuous improvement at every level of their business,” said John P. Rolls-Royce Wins Deal to Power USN TAO

Rolls-Royce won a contract to supply diesel generators, propellers and shaft lines for the US Navy’s new fleet replenishment oiler ships, the John Lewis Class. Planned to total 17 ships, the new John Lewis class (previously known as TAO – X) will increase the US Navy’s capability to transfer fuel to its surface ships, in operations around the globe. For each ship, Rolls-Royce will supply two Kamewa 150A Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP), while two Bergen B32:40xL8A generator sets will provide power to satisfy on board energy requirements.

Foxx Names New Members to Maritime Industry Advisory Panel

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the appointment of 29 new members to the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). Established in 2010, MTSNAC is comprised of leaders from commercial transportation firms, ship construction, repair and recycling, trade associations, state and local public entities, labor organizations, academics, and environmental groups that advise the Secretary and the Maritime Administration on policies to ensure that the U.S. Marine Transportation System is capable of responding to projected trade increases.

NASSCO Wins Six Ship U.S. Navy Contract

General Dynamics NASSCO, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), won a contract by the U.S. Navy for the detailed design and construction of the next generation of fleet oilers, the John Lewis class (TAO-205), previously known as the TAO(X). This contract is for the construction of six ships. The first ship of the program was funded in the FY2016 budget, allowing engineering and design work to begin immediately. The U.S. Navy’s FY2017 budget requests advance procurement for a second ship, with procurement expected to occur in FY2018. Designed to transfer fuel to U.S.

On Saturday, April 23, General Dynamics NASSCO hosted a christening ceremony for the second Jones Act ECO Class tanker for American Petroleum Tankers (APT) under construction at the company's shipyard in San Diego. NASSCO Launches ECO Class Tanker Independence

U.S shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO launched the first ship in a series of ECO Class tankers for the SEA-Vista fleet at a christening and launch ceremony at the company’s shipyard in San Diego on Saturday, December 12. The ship, the Independence, is a 610-foot, 50,000 deadweight-ton, and LNG-conversion-ready product tanker with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. According to the shipbuilder, the new ECO Class tanker symbolizes the emerging direction of the shipping industry in the U.S. toward cleaner, more fuel-efficient modes of transporting product.

SCA Appoints Senior Defense Advisor

Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) has appointed Rear Admiral Jeff Brooks (Ret.) to Senior Defense Advisor. Brooks joined SCA in October and will focus on advocating, communicating and representing the ship repair industry to all stakeholders and to the U.S. Navy. Throughout his 38-year Navy career, Admiral Brooks served in key maintenance assignments, culminating in promotion to two-star flag rank and assignment to the Navy’s top maintenance position as Fleet Maintenance Officer.

TOTE: World's First LNG-Powered Containership Delivered

The culmination of a historic journey in U.S. shipbuilding history ended today with the announcment that General Dynamics NASSCO delivered  Isla Bella, the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containership, to TOTE Maritime. While TOTE has been making world headlines of late for the recent, tragic loss of its ship El Faro, the technical achievement of this new ship construction program is significant. Bristol Harbor Group Announces Two New Hires

Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) announced the addition of naval architect Zachary Gilfus and mechanical engineer Marissa Stutzman to its naval architecture and marine engineering practice. Gilfus is the most recent addition to BHGI, joining the team at the end of August as a naval architect and marine engineer. Gilfus graduated this past spring from Webb Institute with a Bachelor’s of Science in naval architecture and marine engineering. During his time at Webb, Gilfus interned at four different companies including Carnival Cruise Lines and General Dynamics NASSCO.

TOTE’s 2nd LNG Containership Launched

Shipping company TOTE and shipbuilder NASSCO on Saturday launched Perla del Caribe, the second of two Marlin Class ships – the first containerships in the world to be powered by natural gas. The christening and launch ceremony took place at General Dynamics NASSCO’s shipyard in San Diego. The 764-foot-long Perla del Caribe and sister ship, christened Isla Bella, are Jones Act vessels built for the Puerto Rican trade for TOTE Shipholdings and will be operated by TOTE subsidiary Sea Star Line out of Jacksonville, Fla.

Kinder Morgan Buys Four Newbuilding Resales

Kinder Morgan, Inc. is expanding its growing fleet of Jones Act product tankers having signed a definitive agreement valued at an all-in price of $568 million with Philly Tankers LLC to take assignment of contracts for the construction of four, new 50,000-deadweight-ton, Tier II tankers to be constructed at the Aker Philadelphia Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The transaction requires approval of shareholders holding 80 percent of the shares of Philly Tankers AS. Philly Tankers AS is the parent of Philly Tankers LLC.
