Finnlines Ferry Trio to Go with Wärtsilä

Finnish corporation Wärtsilä will supply its hybrid power conversion system for three new roro ferries being built at the Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China for Finnlines, part of the Italian Grimaldi Group. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in Q4 2019.The hybrid solution, which includes a 5000 kWh energy storage system, will enable these ships to operate with zero emissions while in port, and to meet the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Green Plus class notation. IMO2020: Low Sulfur Fuel Potential Pitfalls

LR Awards Wärtsilä Cyber Certification

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Wärtsilä system-level cyber certification for its network architecture relating to Wärtsilä’s integrated main and auxiliary machinery. Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has posted higher earnings in the first nine months, but said the result was hit by losses at its Vard unit. ClassNK Creates Cyber Security Team

AKA, MAN Collaborate for LNG-Powered Ferry

Aspin Kemp and Associates Inc. (AKA) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) are working together on the delivery of the propulsion package for 1+1 230-meter-long RoPax vessel for TT-Line, a German ferry operator. The vessel is to be built at Jiangsu Jingling shipyard in China. The MAN/AKA power and propulsion package includes eight MAN 51/60DF dual fuel engines, propellers and gearboxes, a fuel-gas supply system and HyProp ECO – a hybrid propulsion system. The newbuild TT-Line ferry will have the capacity for 800 passengers and over 200 articulated trucks.

Maritime Fatigue: Just another band aid?

On 24 January, the IMO issued updated guidelines on fatigue. This is just another in a long series of band aids that attempt to cover over the problem without providing a solution. Fatigue is a long-standing weakness in the maritime industry. It is recognized as a major or contributing causal factor in the majority of maritime casualties. As is well-known, fatigue is caused by a lack of sleep and relaxation. These, in turn, are the result of too few people being tasked with too much work. Guidance on how to recognize and manage fatigue is meaningless.
