LR Approves New LNG-Fueled VLCC Design

The UK-based maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted approval in principle (AiP) to a quartet for an LNG-fueled VLCC design that uses a prismatic GTT Mark III membrane LNG tank.The AiP was granted to China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), CNOOC Gas and Power Group, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), and Gaztransport and Technigaz(GTT).The main objectives of the AiP include developing a specification for a dual fuel VLCC that meets the IMO’s GHG 2030 emission limitations and preparing the relevant design drawings.CMES and CNOOC G&P…

LR Appoints Butcher as Managing Director

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced the appointment of Paul Butcher as Managing Director, LR Management Systems & Inspection Services. Based in Birmingham, U.K., Butcher brings with him over 30 years of leadership experience in global professional services businesses. After graduating from Southampton University, Butcher held a number of leadership roles in the assurance, IT services and telecommunications sectors, including positions with SAI Global, Marconi, Ericsson and Damovo.

Engine Oil Mist Detection System Earns LR Type Approval

Quality Monitoring Instruments (QMI), manufacturer of engine and atmospheric oil mist detection systems, has received Type Approval certification from classification society Lloyd’s Register for its engine oil mist detection system. Having received ABS Type Approval in 2014, the LR certification follows the successful calibration testing of QMI’s Multiplex and Triplex products at Cardiff University’s gas turbine laboratory, the only facility in the U.K. capable of processing oil mist in a safe environment to test systems in accordance with the stringent IACS M67 protocol.
