The first comprehensive study of the impact of global sea-level rise on tides has implications for future coastal flood risk, harbour management, and the long term planning of tidal energy sites. New LEDs Light Up Port of Cristóbal
New high efficacy LED flood lights have been installed at the Port of Cristóbal in Colon, Panama. SONARAY, a central Virginia-based manufacturer of industrial, commercial and maritime LED lighting fixtures, has supplied 60 of its 520-watt Delta Flood Lights, installed at “the mole,” a moniker used to describe an area of the port. The guests included Dirk Brengelmann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Netherlands and his Norwegian colleague Martin Sørby. Hosting the event onboard AIDAprima was symbolic and significant, AIDAprima was the first cruise ship in the world that uses a dual-fuel engine to produce its energy from LNG while docked at port.

MacGregor Solutions for LNG-powered Cruise Ships
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured orders for environmentally-friendly equipment for four next-generation eco-cruise ships which will be built in Germany and Finland. The vessels will be the first liquefied natural gas-powered cruise ships to enter the market. The orders were booked into first quarter 2016 order intake. MacGregor Delivers Major Winch for Korean Heavy Lift Barge
Following an order announced in October 2013, MacGregor, part of Cargotec delivered and commissioned 45 variable frequency drive (VFD) winches and a full control system for the recently completed heavy-lift crane barge Hyundai HLV-10000, one of the largest heavy lift vessels in the world. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries, built the large floating crane to meet the increasing demands for heavyweight shipbuilding support activities, along with offshore lifting operations.

Extension operations on MSC Sinfonia, the second out of four MSC cruise ships to undergo the Renaissance Programme of enhancements, have begunin the past days at Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo. Wärtsilä Receives Repeat Order from Evergas
Three new 27,000 cbm LNG/Multigas Carriers for Evergas, the Denmark based transporter of petrochemical gases and natural gas liquids, are to be built featuring the integrated Wärtsilä solution, comprising the main propulsion equipment, the gas fuel supply system, and the cargo handling system. This order is an extension of the one placed in 2013 for a series of three similar vessels. The ships are being built by the Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China, and feature an advanced design that offers very high efficiency and unparalleled flexibility.
Wärtsilä Win Evergas LNG Carriers Contract
Wärtsilä to supply cargo handling package, dual-fuel engines & propulsion for Denmark's Evergas to be built at Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China. In addition to LNG, the ships will be able to carry and reliquefy Ethane and LPGs with the cargo handling package supplied by Wärtsilä. The vessels will operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) using Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine technology. This will enable them to comply with current and anticipated environmental legislation, including the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Tier III regulations.
China Throwing Money at the Waterways
China's Ministry of Transportation reports that the country spent US$2.3 billion on the waterways during the period January to April 2013. This investment by the government shows an increase of 21.2 per cent over the same period in 2012. River transportation enjoys lower shipping rates, larger shipment volume and less energy consumption, although China's river transportation development has long been lagging behind other means of transportation. According to a Xinhua report, with support from the state government, China's river traffic has come onto a development fast track since 2011.

The slowdown in Chinese industrial production growth ads to the existing concerns that China is going through challenging times, as Beijing aims for a soft landing and a transition of the economy, BIMCO reported, adding that the demand for dry bulk shipping and container shipping is bound to change accordingly. China Industrial Production continued along the retreating path of the Purchasing Managers Indexes published a fortnight ago. First LNG Containership Receives ME-GI Engine
Late last month, NASSCO engineers placed the world’s first dual-fuel slow speed engine into the World’s First Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered containership. The ME-GI engine represents the next generation of technology that will open the door to a cleaner and safer shipping industry, particularly in the United States. Doosan Engine built the 8L70ME-C8.2GI under license from the designer MAN Diesel and Turbo. The engine weighs 539 tons. TOTE Shipholdings, Inc., a subsidiary of TOTE, is the first company to use these engines in their vessels.

Miller Boat Line has begun using a 10-20 percent biofuel mix in one of its passenger vessels, the William Market, and has plans to eventually use it in all four of its vessels. The biofuel, G2 Diesel, provides 15 percent better fuel economy than traditional diesel and leaves a cleaner wake, protecting Lake Erie and generating fewer harmful emissions. Miller Boat Line has long been the most value-friendly way to travel to Put-in-Bay and the only way to bring vehicles to the island.
