Hapag-Lloyd Adds 11,100 Reefer Containers

Hapag-Lloyd is investing in its container fleet and has ordered 11,100 state-of-the-art reefer containers. The Impact of Future Global Tides on Energy

The first comprehensive study of the impact of global sea-level rise on tides has implications for future coastal flood risk, harbour management, and the long term planning of tidal energy sites. This research, published in Continental Shelf Research by scientists at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), University of Southampton and Deltares, shows that sea-level rise can significantly alter tides across the world in many different ways in both space and time. New LEDs Light Up Port of Cristóbal

New high efficacy LED flood lights have been installed at the Port of Cristóbal in Colon, Panama. SONARAY, a central Virginia-based manufacturer of industrial, commercial and maritime LED lighting fixtures, has supplied 60 of its 520-watt Delta Flood Lights, installed at “the mole,” a moniker used to describe an area of the port. Jose Diaz, LAT sales manager for SONARAY, said, “The port was most impressed with the rugged design of our flood lights and the fact that the 520-watt model is rated to produce nearly 60,000 lumens of light output.

Innovative Cruise Ship Hosts LNG Conference

As part of the international trade conference "Making LNG Happen: Combining Forces for Sustainable Shipping," 80 representatives from the fields of business, politics and science visited the cruise ship AIDAprima in Rotterdam on Thursday, January 26, 2017. The guests included Dirk Brengelmann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Netherlands and his Norwegian colleague Martin Sørby. Hosting the event onboard AIDAprima was symbolic and significant, AIDAprima was the first cruise ship in the world that uses a dual-fuel engine to produce its energy from LNG while docked at port.

MacGregor Solutions for LNG-powered Cruise Ships

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has secured orders for environmentally-friendly equipment for four next-generation eco-cruise ships which will be built in Germany and Finland. The vessels will be the first liquefied natural gas-powered cruise ships to enter the market. The orders were booked into first quarter 2016 order intake. "Cruise ships operate in some of the world's most fragile ecosystems and a rising demand from both authorities and operators requires that onboard systems are as environmentally-friendly as possible," says Lars Öberg, Sales Manager, RoRo at MacGregor.

Fully Electrical Ferry Wins Efficiency Award

The first purely battery-driven car and passenger ferry Ampere has won the Ship Efficiency Award in the category Environmental Technology. The award recognizes innovative solutions which have contributed to reducing the environmental impact of shipping operations. MacGregor Delivers Major Winch for Korean Heavy Lift Barge

Following an order announced in October 2013, MacGregor, part of Cargotec delivered and commissioned 45 variable frequency drive (VFD) winches and a full control system for the recently completed heavy-lift crane barge Hyundai HLV-10000, one of the largest heavy lift vessels in the world. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Hyundai Heavy Industries, built the large floating crane to meet the increasing demands for heavyweight shipbuilding support activities, along with offshore lifting operations.

MSC Sinfonia Upgradation at Fincantieri Shipyard

Extension operations on MSC Sinfonia, the second out of four MSC cruise ships to undergo the Renaissance Programme of enhancements, have begunin the past days at Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo. Only 2 months ago the conversion operations of the prototype MSC Armonia were completed and the ship left the shipyard on November 17. The remarkable feat of engineering of the Palermo shipyard -has started with steel-cutting operations on the ship and has continued then by moving the forward section for about 30 meters forward to allow the new midship section to be inserted.

DNV GL “Modification Excellence Award” for Schiffahrt

Classification society DNV GL recognised that E.R. Schiffahrt has retrofitted seven ultra large container vessels to meet the highest energy efficiency standards and improve its cargo capacity through the DNV GL Modification Excellence Award. Jörg Lampe, Senior Project Engineer Risk & Safety and Systems Engineering at DNV GL, presented the award to Jürgen Kudritzki, Technical Director at E.R. Schiffahrt, in Hamburg. MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won new contracts that will see electrically-driven versions of its mooring systems fitted to two new tender assist drilling rigs for Thailand-based Mermaid Maritime Public Company Limited. The Self-Erected Drilling Tender (Hull No. CMHI (JS)-151-1 and Hull No. CMHI (JS)-151-2) are under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co Ltd with delivery planned for 2016. First LNG Containership Receives ME-GI Engine

Late last month, NASSCO engineers placed the world’s first dual-fuel slow speed engine into the World’s First Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered containership. The ME-GI engine represents the next generation of technology that will open the door to a cleaner and safer shipping industry, particularly in the United States. Doosan Engine built the 8L70ME-C8.2GI under license from the designer MAN Diesel and Turbo. The engine weighs 539 tons. TOTE Shipholdings, Inc., a subsidiary of TOTE, is the first company to use these engines in their vessels.

Sharp Slowdown in China Industrial Activity

The slowdown in Chinese industrial production growth ads to the existing concerns that China is going through challenging times, as Beijing aims for a soft landing and a transition of the economy, BIMCO reported, adding that the demand for dry bulk shipping and container shipping is bound to change accordingly. China Industrial Production continued along the retreating path of the Purchasing Managers Indexes published a fortnight ago. The industrial production indicator, measured by the percentage change year-over-year, increased by 6.9% in August.

Wärtsilä Receives Repeat Order from Evergas

Three new 27,000 cbm LNG/Multigas Carriers for Evergas, the Denmark based transporter of petrochemical gases and natural gas liquids, are to be built featuring the integrated Wärtsilä solution, comprising the main propulsion equipment, the gas fuel supply system, and the cargo handling system. This order is an extension of the one placed in 2013 for a series of three similar vessels. The ships are being built by the Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard in China, and feature an advanced design that offers very high efficiency and unparalleled flexibility.

China Throwing Money at the Waterways

China's Ministry of Transportation reports that the country spent US$2.3 billion on the waterways during the period January to April 2013. This investment by the government shows an increase of 21.2 per cent over the same period in 2012. River transportation enjoys lower shipping rates, larger shipment volume and less energy consumption, although China's river transportation development has long been lagging behind other means of transportation. According to a Xinhua report, with support from the state government, China's river traffic has come onto a development fast track since 2011.

Wärtsilä Win Evergas LNG Carriers Contract

Wärtsilä to supply cargo handling package, dual-fuel engines & propulsion for Denmark's Evergas to be built at Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China. In addition to LNG, the ships will be able to carry and reliquefy Ethane and LPGs with the cargo handling package supplied by Wärtsilä. The vessels will operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) using Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine technology. This will enable them to comply with current and anticipated environmental legislation, including the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Tier III regulations.

Crowley Adds 400 Refrigerated Containers

As produce farmers across the Americas gear up for the peak winter produce season, Crowley has added 400 new refrigerated containers to its fleet to accommodate their needs. The 40-ft containers were delivered last week at Puerto Limon in Costa Rica and will be distributed throughout the Central American countries Crowley serves within the next couple of weeks. The state-of-the-art units were purchased to accommodate future growth and to replace older units. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock received a patent Nov. 13 for their discovery and development of a new smart material called Galfenol. Galfenol is a magnetostrictive smart material that can be used in sensors, actuators and structural supports. The material was co-discovered in 1999 by NSWC Carderock and the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and has been in development for the past 13 years in partnership with Etrema Products Inc. Bourbon, Schilling Robotics ROV Design

Bourbon Subsea Services and Schilling Robotics have combined their expertise and experience to develop a new generation of ROVs (submarine robots) for the Inspection, Maintenance and Repair of offshore fields, market segment supported by the need for regular maintenance of the existing subsea infrastructures on fields currently in operation. The HD ROV is a robot work class type, with a more compact design and less energy consumption, equaling the largest ROVs by carrying up to 250 kilos of equipment in operation.

Miller Boat Line “Green” Ferry

Miller Boat Line has begun using a 10-20 percent biofuel mix in one of its passenger vessels, the William Market, and has plans to eventually use it in all four of its vessels. The biofuel, G2 Diesel, provides 15 percent better fuel economy than traditional diesel and leaves a cleaner wake, protecting Lake Erie and generating fewer harmful emissions. Miller Boat Line has long been the most value-friendly way to travel to Put-in-Bay and the only way to bring vehicles to the island. G2 Diesel, is manufactured by a local company named 11 Good Energy, headquartered in Canton, Ohio.
