Concor Begins Maiden Coastal Voyage

India has huge potential for enhancing modal share of coastal shipping and inland water navigation. The current share is only 7% unlike countries like China with 24%  and Germany 11%. India looks to tap this segment in a big way.The maiden coastal voyage of a vessel of Container Corporation of India (Concor) was flagged off by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Shipping and  Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Railways.CONCOR is a public sector unit (PSU) under Ministry of railways. The vessel SSL Mumbai is sailing from Kandla Port to Tuticorin via Mangalore and Cochin.

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 4.13% and together handled 231.48 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to July, 2018 as against 222.29 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year.During this period nine Major Ports - Kolkata (incl. Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic.The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port (12.18%), followed by Cochin (10.30%), Paradip (8.31%), New Mangalore ( 7.88%) and Kolkata [inc. Indian Ports Register 1.78% Growth in April

The major Indian ports collectively recorded a growth of 1.78 per cent during April, handling 56.81 million tonnes of cargo, said the Shipping Ministry. "The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 1.78% and together handled 56.81 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April 2018 as against 55.82  Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year," said a press release from the government. The Nine Ports Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic.

India Ports Register 4.77% Growth During 2017-18

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 4.77 per cent and together handled 679.35 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April 2017 to March 2018 as against 648.39 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. Nine Ports - Kolkata (including Haldia), Visakhapatnam, Paradip, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal also registered positive growth in traffic. India's Major Ports See 4.58% Cargo Traffic Growth

Major ports in India have recorded a cargo traffic growth of 4.58 percent and together handled 560.97 million tonnes (MT) of merchandise during the period April 2017 to January 2018, as against 536.41 MT handled during the corresponding period of previous year. For the period from April 2017 to January 2018, eight ports i.e. Kolkata including Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic. Indian Ports Register Positive Growth of 3.64%

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.64% and together handled 499.41 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to December, 2017 as against 481.87 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. For the period from April- December 2017, Eight Ports (Kolkata (incl.Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Kandla) have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Cochin Port (17.27%), followed by Paradip (14.59%), Kolkata [incl. Haldia] (12.45%), New Mangalore (6.60%) and JNPT (5.94%).

India's 12 Major Ports Capacity Increased to 1,359 MT

The Ministry of Shipping has re-rated the capacities of all berths across 12 Major Ports in order to benchmark port capacities with global standards as per Berthing Policy, 2016. The Re-rating exercise identified an additional capacity of 293MT available with the Major Ports. The effective rated capacity of 12 Major Ports is now 1,359 MT per annum and capacity at desired occupancy is 989 MT per annum. The effective rated capacity of Kandla Port is 246 MT, that is highest among Indian port, followed by 234 MT of Paradip Port.

Major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.46% and together handled 439.66 Million Tonnes of cargo during the period April to November, 2017 as against 424.96 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. Indian Ports Register Positive Growth of 3.27% in H1

The major ports in India have recorded a growth of 3.27% during the period April to September, 2017 and together handled 383 Million Tonnes of cargo as against 371 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. The Eight Ports i.e. Kolkata, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, JNPT and Kandla registered positive growth in traffic during the period April to October, 2017. The highest growth was registered by Cochin Port (17.66%), followed by Kolkata [incl. Haldia], New Mangalore, Paradip with growth of about 12%.

Cabinet Approves Renaming of Kandla Port

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval to the renaming of Kandla Port as Deendayal Port. Ports in India are generally named after the city or town in which these are situated. However, the Government, in special cases, after due consideration, have renamed the Ports after great leaders in the past. By renaming Kandla Port as "Deendayal Port, Kandla", a grateful nation would be remembering the invaluable contributions made by one of the greatest sons of India, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.

Kandla Port Renamed as Deendayal Port

The Indian Ministry of Shipping has issued a notification renaming Kandla Port Trust as Deendayal Port Trust with effect from 25th of September, 2017. Kandla Port, located on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, is one of the twelve major ports in the country. As per the Ministry’s notification, the Central Government, in exercise of powers conferred on it under Indian Ports Act, 1908, made the amendment to replace “Kandla” with “Deendayal”. Technology Drives Growth of India’s Major Ports

Technological advancement for modernization of major ports and reforms for enhancing ease of doing business are driving and sustaining the growth trend line at India’s major ports. The country’s 12 major ports together handled 273.96 Million Tonnes of cargo between April to August, 2017 as against 265.31 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year, an overall growth of 3.26%. Seven Ports (Kolkata, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai and JNPT) registered positive growth in traffic during the period April to August 2017.

Iran's Chabahar Port Signs Pact with India Ports Global

India Ports Global has signed a contract with Aria Banader of Iran to equip and operate two terminals at Chabahar - Shahid -Beheshti Port in Iran for transportation of goods and other purposes. "As per Article 6 of the contract, effort are to be made to commence commercial operations at Chabahar –Shahid- Beheshti Port in Iran within 18 months from the contract activation date or 4 months from the date on which the Lessor hands over the Terminals and the infrastructure facilities to the Lessee in accordance with the terms of the Contract," said a press release from the government.

Indian Ports Register 6.79% Growth in Traffic

The twelve major ports under the Ministry of Shipping, India handled a record 647.43 MT of traffic in 2016-17, registering an annual growth rate of 6.79 percent, as against 4.32 percent last year. With this, these ports have out- performed private ports for the second consecutive year. The private ports have registered a traffic growth rate of 4 percent this year. The top position in cargo handling was retained by Kandla Port that handled 105.44 Million Tonnes of cargo, registering a growth of 5.39% over last year.

Indian Ports to Introduce RFID System

India's  all major ports have been asked to put in place the RFID system to ensure real-time tracking of vehicles and men at ports. "All major ports have been directed to implement RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) system by March 31, 2017. Implementation of RFID system will eliminate manual checking of documents at port gate and ensure real-time tracking of movement of vehicles, men and materials," Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan stated. This would reduce congestion and also cost of operations at Ports, he said.

Indian Ports to Go Green

The Indian Ministry of Shipping, as a part of its ‘Green Port Initiative’ has been emphasizing on use of renewable sources of energy to power Major Ports across the nation. The Ministry aims to set up 91.50 MW of solar energy capacity at the twelve Major Ports and 45 MW of wind energy capacity by the two Major Ports of Kandla and V. O. Chidambaranar. Major Ports have started the process of setting-up renewable energy projects by investing Rs.704.52 crores ($ 104 million) in these projects.

Sagarmala – Sailing Towards a Vibrant Gujarat

India's Shipping Minister of State  Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the state- of -the -art exhibition display of Sagarmala, Ministry of Shipping at Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit, 2017, yesterday (Jan 11). Gujarat has been at the forefront of the maritime development in India. A) Port modernization:  Projects have been identified for capacity augmentation at existing ports especially Kandla to meet the future growth in cargo volumes. These include mechanization of cargo handling process, development of multi-purpose berth and setting up of barge and coastal jetty to name a few.

Indian Ports Record 6.2% Growth in Cargo Traffic Last Q

According to the Ministry of Shipping in India, the 12 major ports in the country together handled 159.0 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of the current fiscal (April-June 2016-17), against a cargo traffic of 149.74 million tonnes in the similar quarter of the previous fiscal, a year-on-year growth of 6.2 per cent. The  joint secretary (ports) Pravir Krishn said the growth in cargo traffic showed some buoyancy, growing at 6.2 per cent in April-June FY17 against the 4.5 per cent growth recorded in April-June FY16.

Indian Coast Guard Rescues Tanker

On receiving the distress call motor tanker  MV Infinity I around 20 nautical miles from Goa on Wednesday evening, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) salvaged the vessel, its cargo and rescued 14 crew by dispatching ships from Goa. MV Infinity I reported water ingress and continuous listing (nautical term for tilting) to starboard (right side of the ship). The vessel had reported that the list is increasing despite ship's de-watering efforts. Such emergencies can lead to the sinking of the ship.

Asian Piracy at 4 Year Low

The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ReCAPP) May 2016 report  says that only eight incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships were reported in Asia for the month, down 65 percent from May last year. Between January and May 2016, a total of 38 incidents were reported in Asia, and this accounts for a 56% decrease in overall number of incidents compared to January-May 2015 when 87 incidents were reported. The number of incidents reported during January-May 2016 is the lowest among the five-year reporting period of January-May of 2012-2016.
