SSA Terminals, the operator of Oakland International Container Terminal, submitted last week a $30 million order for three 300-foot-tall gantry cranes, which are expected to be delivered in 18 months.The cranes will go to Oakland International Terminal on Oakland Estuary and will become the tallest on the West Coast, port officials said.The project aims to prepare the port to handle the world's largest container ships, which can be up to 1,300 feet long and carry nearly 23,000 cargo containers.

The Port of Oakland reported a record-setting 2018 in cargo movement, on account of an expected spike in imports aimed at beating new tariffs on goods shipped from China.According to data released by the port, it handled the equivalent of 2.55 million 20-foot containers last year. The Port of Oakland had its busiest November ever for imports in 2018, shattering an 11-year-old record. The Port said today that it handled the equivalent of 83,364 loaded 20-foot import containers last month. That beat the old November record of 76,902 containers set in 2007. The Port of Oakland named maritime veteran Eric Napralla as its Chief Wharfinger. Napralla, a 6-year Port employee, will manage seaport operations ranging from tenant relationships to facilities leasing. He replaces Chris Peterson, who retired last week after 25 years at the Port, 12 as Chief Wharfinger. “Eric brings a wealth of experience to the job,” said Port of Oakland Maritime Director John Driscoll. Oakland’s largest marine terminal operator plans to clear the air using hybrid cargo-handling technology. SSA Terminals said today it will retrofit 13 diesel-powered cranes with diesel-electric hybrid engines. A one-stop, online gateway to the Port of Oakland went live. The Port said its new tech platform, called the Oakland Portal, would provide a single point of entry to seaport operations. It’s believed to be an industry first in the quest to digitize containerized cargo transportation. “This is what our industry is asking for,” said Port of Oakland Maritime Director John Driscoll. The Oakland Portal is thought to be the first digital collaboration platform that aggregates shipping information from every marine terminal in a harbor.
Oakland Records Its Best Ever Month of Imports
April 2018 was the Port of Oakland’s best month ever for imports in its 90-year history. The 75,369 TEUs loaded imports volume bested the previous record of 75,243 set in April 2006.The port’s total cargo volume is up 2.9 percent over the same period a year ago. The port reported that terminals handled 791,371 TEUs (including loaded and empty containers) between January to April 2018. During the same period in 2017, the volume was 768,789 TEUs.“These container statistics show that we are off to a solid start in 2018,” said Port of Oakland Maritime Director John Driscoll.

Port of Oakland Landmark Project Could Start by Summer
According to the port, developer CenterPoint Properties said today that it awaits only permits to start on the Seaport Logistics Complex. Port officials met with CenterPoint Board members last month to tour the 27-acre building site. Both sides have since expressed hope for a mid-year start to construction. “We’re eager to get underway with this project," said CenterPoint Chief Development Officer, Michael Murphy. Industrial real estate giant CenterPoint is building a 440,000-square-foot facility at the port. It will be adjacent to the port’s new $100 million railyard.
Port of Oakland Exports Jump 2.1 Percent
The Port of Oakland reported that containerized export volume in January increased 2.1 percent from the same month a year ago. It was the second consecutive month of export growth at the port. The increase follows a 1.8 percent decline in Oakland exports during 2017. The port said a weakening dollar contributed to the January increase, as American products are more affordable overseas when the dollar’s value declines. The port said exports of refrigerated commodities climbed in January. Pork exports jumped 20 percent last month when compared to January 2017. Beef shipments were up 18 percent.

The equivalent of 2.42 million 20-foot containers were handled at the Port of Oakland in 2017, as the U.S. West Coast port surpassed its previous record of 2.39 million containers set in 2014. Strong import numbers helped the port to break another two of its cargo records in 2017, with 919,523 loaded import containers and 1.85 million combined imports and exports. Overall, Port of Oakland’s imports increased 4 percent in 2017 over 2016 totals, while December imports rose 6.4 percent over the same month in 2016. The port attributed the import rally to a strong U.S.

The port’s largest marine terminal operator responded saying it will use the program to further expand weeknight operations. The announcement comes as the Port abandons its traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. operating model. “The old way doesn’t work any longer,” said Port Executive Director Chris Lytle. Port Commissioners voted last week to continue through June 30 the fund that partially subsidizes extended gate hours. It had been scheduled to expire this week.
