Gasum Makes its 1st Cruise Ship STS LNG Bunkering

The Nordic energy company Gasum said that its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker vessel Coralius conducted first ever ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering to a cruise ship - Carnival Corporation's cruise vessel Costa Smeralda.During the bunkering operation, LNG was supplied to the newbuild Costa Smeralda at the Meyer Turku shipyard. Research: Ammonia as Marine Fuel Feasible

According to research by C-Job Naval Architects, Ammonia can be safely and effectively applied as a marine fuel to reduce harmful emissions in the maritime industry.The research uses a new concept design, an ammonia carrier fueled by its own cargo, to study the concept of using ammonia as a marine fuel and achieve a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in shipping. EIC Made Compulsory in Ports

World’s Largest STS Transfer Hub Comes in Malaysia

KA Petra, a Malaysian ship-to-ship (STS) transfer specialist, has signed a Heads of Agreement (HOA) with Hutchison Port Holdings to jointly develop the world’s largest STS transfer hub in the country.Under the terms of the HOA, KA Petra will have 70% interest in the project, whilst Hutchison Ports will take a strategic 30% stake.Based on preliminary studies, construction of the STS Hub is estimated to cost USD150 million to USD180 million, and will be funded by a combination of internally generated funds and debt financing.

The Efficiency of New Ships is Falling: CE Delft Study

Recent improvements in the design efficiency of new ships went into reverse last year, a new independent study has found. According to the CE Delft study the average design efficiency of new bulk carriers, oil tankers and gas carriers was worse in 2016 than in 2015. First Ship with IMO Tier III EIAPP Engines Launched

The launch of the L’Astrolabe, a 72 metre polar logistics vessel fitted with a complete Wärtsilä propulsion machinery package and Wärtsilä NOR (NOx Reducer) SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust gas cleaning systems for all the main engines, took place on July 12. This is the first vessel operating with the International Maritime Organisation’s IMO Tier III EIAPP (Engine International Air Pollution Prevention) certified Wärtsilä diesel engines. The ship was built by PIRIOU (France) for the French Southern and Antarctic Lands Administration.

FueLNG Completes First Commercial LNG Bunkering in Singapore

FueLNG, a joint venture between Keppel and Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte) Ltd (Shell), has achieved the first commercial Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunker transfer in Singapore by completing truck-to-ship bunkering for the Floating Liquefaction (FLNG) vessel, Hilli Episeyo. The LNG bunker transfer, which was carried out in batches from 22 July to 23 September 2017, was conducted in accordance with the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC) Technical Reference for LNG Bunkering (TR 56), which provides a safe, efficient and sustainable technical framework for LNG bunkering operations.

Hapag-Lloyd to Unveil Plan for 2020 Fuel Regs in 2018

German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd plans to give details within three to six months on compliance with tighter shipping fuel regulations that will kick in from 2020, its chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said on Wednesday. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has ruled that heavily polluting high sulphur fuel will be banned for parts of the global industry from that date. Habben Jansen told an investor and analyst call there were three options to cut emissions - more expensive low sulphur fuel, so-called scrubbing or using liquefied natural gas (LNG).
