Global trade association Interferry and Mercy Ships today announced that Interferry will support Mercy Ships, an international charity with the mission to increase access to healthcare in developing nations through a fleet of hospital ships. Interferry Welcomes EEDI Status Quo for RoRo Vessels
Trade association Interferry has welcomed this week’s decision by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to uphold previously agreed sector-specific Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) targets for ro-ro passenger and ro-ro freight vessels.The committee’s latest session – MEPC 73 – tightened EEDI requirements for certain ship types, but confirmed that ferries would be among the categories where it is appropriate to retain the original timeline and reduction rates.
Interferry Names New Chairman and Board Members
Interferry, the trade association representing the worldwide ferry industry, has announced that the new chairman of its board of directors is John Steen-Mikkelsen, CEO of Danish ferry operator Danske Faerger.Steen-Mikkelsen was elected together with three new board members at the annual general meeting held last week in Cancun, Mexico, during the association’s 43rd annual conference.The Interferry board is drawn from all types of large and small ferry operations - including ro-pax, ro-ro, cruise ferries, fast ferries and passenger-only ferries - as well as industry suppliers.

Damen, NSTC offer Crew Training in Philippines
To mark this year’s Interferry Conference in Manila, the Philippines, Damen Shipyards Group has teamed up with Netherlands Shipping Training Centre (NSTC), Managed by the international maritime education and training organisation STC-Group. Damen and NSTC have developed a training course for the Philippines-based ferry crew. The training package will feature a number of elements, including rules and regulations (ISM code), crew and crisis management and – important in public transportation – cross cultural differences.
Bryan Steps in as Interferry’s Interim CEO
Darrell Bryan, formerly president and CEO of Victoria Clipper, has started work as interim CEO of Interferry following the retirement of Len Roueche. The Interferry board of directors named Bryan for the role – effective from April 1 - late last year pending the appointment of a permanent successor. Roueche, who has retired after 14 years as CEO, led the organization’s evolution from the International Marine Transit Association (IMTA) to Interferry, the leading international association for ferry operators and industry suppliers.

Growth Potential of European Short Sea Shipping Untapped
A coalition of European shipping sector organisations, led by the European Community Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ECASBA), has called on the European Parliament, Commission and Member States to honour the commitments to support short sea shipping that were made in May last year in the Athens Declaration. European Shipping Week has been granted the European Parliament’s official patronage by its President, Martin Schulz. Both the European Commission and the European Parliament have now actively expressed their support for the week-long event which will be held in Brussels during March 2-6, 2015. Interferry Applauds IMO Consideration of BWTS Exemption
Interferry has praised a decision made at last week’s meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) that could exempt certain ferry operators from fitting equipment required by the impending Ballast Water Management Convention to reduce the spread of invasive species. In a joint submission with Denmark, the trade association argued that ballast water management systems were irrelevant for ships continuously operating in the same body of water, such as between the U.K. and Ireland.

EU Urged to Address IMO Sulphur Requirements
In conjunction with the first meeting of the newly established European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF), which is scheduled to take place today, the shipping industry in a joint statement urges the European Commission to provide support in meeting the IMO requirement for 0.1% sulphur content in marine fuel by 2015. The shipping industry encourages the European Commission to primarily address financial support for ship conversions and to consider the timely application of any additional transitional measures to ensure an appropriate enforcement of the sulphur Directive (Directive 2012/33/EU).
Ro-Pax Ferries Bear Excessive Reinsurance Burden Says Broker
Insurance broker and Maritime London member Willis believes that ro-pax ferries are bearing an unfair share of costs allocated to passenger ships within the International Group of P&I Clubs' reinsurance pool. The broker's head of global P&I, Ben Abraham, told delegates at the recent Interferry annual conference in Malta that there was a compelling argument to differentiate between pure passenger ships and ro-pax ferries, where most carrying capacity is taken up by freight, because their catastrophe risk is so different.
