Swedish manufacturer of diesel engines for marine industry Scania announced that Karin Rådström has been appointed Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing.She takes up her position on 1 March and will report to Henrik Henriksson, President and CEO.Rådström, born in 1979, joined Scania as trainee in 2004 after graduating Master of Engineering in Industrial Management at Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. NYK to Sponsor Shell XPrize Finalist

NYK has agreed to sponsor Team KUROSHIO,* a finalist in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competition, by providing the transportation for the team’s unmanned robots, which are being used in this international competition to quickly and accurately map the ocean floor. Team KUROSHIO has participated in this competition over the past three years, and after passing through the technical documentation stage and an actual ocean test in Round 1, the team has advanced to Round 2, the final round, to be held in October 2018.

Stolt-Nielsen Limited announced Jens F. Grüner-Hegge has been appointed as its new Chief Financial Officer, effective from April 2, 2018. Grüner-Hegge, who has served as Vice President, Corporate Finance since 2007, succeeds longtime CFO Jan Chr. NYK Promotes Its First Woman Captain

On April 1, a deck officer named Tomoko Konishi became the first woman in NYK’s 132-year history to be promoted to the rank of captain. Konishi joined NYK in 2004 after she graduated from the National Institute of Technology, Toba College in Mie prefecture. Since then, she has worked aboard containerships, pure car and truck carriers, and LNG carriers, among others, as a pioneering female officer. She has been active in a number of fields and has also used her onboard experiences in office work.

How to Reduce Risk When Selecting a Ballast Water Management System

It seems like a lifetime coming, but the IMO International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) has been approved and will enter into force on September 8, 2017. Deemed as an environmental necessity, it creates an enormous operational challenge for the maritime industry. As ship owners, system installers and BWM system manufacturers alike prepare for the many challenges associated with implementation, it would be wise to more closely evaluate the real (and sometimes hidden) risks to system operators and manufacturers.

NMEA Selects Board of Directors Lineup

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) announced the selection of its new Board of Directors chairman, vice chairman and secretary, as well as appointment of four additional members. Mike Spyros of Electronics Unlimited, having served as NMEA vice chairman since 2014, took the reins as chairman on January 1, 2017, succeeding Johnny Lindstrom of Westport Yachts, whose term ended at the end of 2016. Board members Steve Katz of Steve's Marine Service and Lou Rota of FLIR Systems moved into respective positions as vice chairman and secretary.

Arthur E. Imperatore, Founder and President of New York Waterways; Captain Donald Marcus, International President of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots; and Christopher Wiernicki, Chairman, President and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping, were recipients of the maritime industry's most prestigious Admiral of the Ocean Sea awards presented at the 47th annual United Seamen's Service gala industry dinner and dance October 28, 2016.
