Latvia’s Economy Growing via German Ports Too

Port of Hamburg: Railborne transport up 4.3%

In the first nine months of the year, the Port of Hamburg transferred substantially more freight on to rail - Seaborne cargo handling was below the previous year’s level, owing to less bulk cargo and a slight downturn in container handling, while there was an increase for conventional general cargo.In the Port of Hamburg, railborne container transport achieved a distinct advance of 4.3 percent in the first nine months of the year. A total of 1.8 million TEU – 20-ft standard containers – were transported by rail between the port and inland inter-modal terminals.

Hamburg’s Traffic on the Rise in Q1

First-Quarter Returns From the Universal Port of Hamburg

This year’s first-quarter throughput total at the Port of Hamburg was notable for a rise in conventional general cargoes, a lower figure of bulk cargoes, a stable trend in container handling and distinct growth on container transport services by rail.In the first quarter of 2018, the Port of Hamburg achieved total throughput of 32.7 million tons (down 7.5 percent). In Hamburg this heading covers general cargo throughput of 22.7 million tons (down 1.8 percent) and bulk cargo throughput of 10.0 million tons (down 18.2 percent).

Port of Hamburg Throughput Dips

The Port of Hamburg achieved total throughput of 66.5 million tons in the first half of 2018, representing a moderate downturn of 4.9 percent, with the downward trend slowing in the second quarter.General cargo throughput at 45.5 million tons (down 2.2 percent) and bulk cargo throughput at 21.1 million tons (down 10.4 percent) contributed to the total in Hamburg. Bulk cargo represents one-third of the total. This segment caused 71 percent of the total downturn, with reductions in suction and liquid cargoes being market-driven.

Navigational Changes Needed at Port of Hamburg

“The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig has expressly underlined the necessity for the adjustment of the navigation channel with its decision today,” says Jens Meier CEO of Hamburg Port Authority commenting on the judgement of the Federal Administrative Court for the fairway adjustment of the Lower and Outer Elbe. “The navigation adjustments will come, now it is a question of extending the process. We will concentrate on the questions of possible fluctuations of the salinity of the Elbe and habitat protection impact assessment.

Port of Hamburg Resumes Growth Course

Container throughput achieves 1.0 percent advance in 2016/ Setting a record result for seaport-hinterland rail transport with 2.4 million TEU. In 2016 Germany’s largest universal port achieved a turnaround in seaborne cargo throughput, reaching a total 138.2 million tons in the general and bulk cargo segments. ‘Seaborne cargo throughput in the Port of Hamburg again developed upwards with an increase of 0.3 percent. Stronger general cargo throughput offset a slight downturn in bulk cargo throughput.

German, Russian Groups Partner on Port Digitization

In early April, during the traditional German week in St. Petersburg, a workshop was run with the accent on ‘Digitalization in the port sector and logistics’. It was co-organized by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), the German-Russian chamber of commerce and the German business Eastern-Europe association. The event also provided a suitable backdrop signing a partnersship and cooperation agreement between Port of Hamburg Marketing and the Admiral Makarov State University for Sea and Inland Waterway Shipping. The ports in Hamburg and St. Petersburg both lie very close to the cities.

Port of Hamburg’s 2017 Volumes on Pace with 2016

At 70 million tons, first-half seaborne cargo throughput in Hamburg in 2017, including the general and bulk cargo segments, all but matched the previous year’s, being one-fifth of one percent (0.2 percent) lower. In the first six months of 2017 containerized general cargo throughput at 4.45 million TEU (20-ft standard containers) was at the previous year’s level. Up by one percent at 23.5 million tons, bulk cargo throughput in Germany’s largest universal port continued to grow.

Hamburg Welcomes Its Largest Ever Box Ship

The largest ever containership to call at the port on the Elbe berthed in Hamburg early on Thursday morning, March 15. The oceangoing giant CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery made its maiden call at the Port of Hamburg's HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) where it will discharge approximately 7,000 TEU and load 4,000. The 400-meter-long CMA CGM Antoine de Saint Exupery, delivered to French owner CMA CGM earlier this year, has a capacity of 20,776 TEU. End-to-end, those containers would cover a distance of over 125 kilometers.

Port of Hamburg Continues Cargo Records, Adds Jobs

The Port of Hamburg continues record performance handling a total of 72.6 million tons (+ 6.6 percent) in the first six months of 2014. Hamburg’s universal port with 50.7 million tons of predominantly container handling achieves a result of 4.8 million TEU (20-ft standard containers), an increase of 6.8 percent. The largest seaports on the north European continent show an average growth in total handling of 1.8 percent and in container handling of 2.6 percent. The Port of Hamburg can look back on above average growth in container traffic, building up its market share from 25.7 to 26.7 percent.

Hamburg, St. Petersburg Port Businesses Go for Dialogue

Hamburg and St. Petersburg have been partner cities since 1957, cultivating close economic, cultural, social and scientific contacts. Similarly, the ports of the two cities have maintained excellent economic links for decades. So even in a politically tense situation, Hamburg and St. Petersburg are going for dialogue and cooperation. On August 19, more than 220 representatives of the port and transport industry in Hamburg and Russia therefore gathered for the traditional Port of Hamburg reception in St. Petersburg hosted by Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM).

Hamburg Port Dredging Delayed

"We respect the decision announced today by the Federal Administrative Court (FAC) in Leipzig on the deepening and widening of the navigation channel on the Lower and Outer Elbe. A final decision can only be taken when the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has clarified questions still outstanding on the so-called prohibition of deterioration and desirability of improvement embodied in the European Water Framework Directive. These questions will be resolved by spring 2015 in connection with complaints against a deepening of the River Weser.

Egloff Named Executive Board Member of Port of Hamburg

The Supervisory Board of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) has appointed Ingo Egloff, a member of the Hamburg City Parliament and the Bundestag for many years, as a HHM Executive Board Member. Egloff, who was a member of the Bundestag Commission for Economy and Technology for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and spokesman for his parliamentary group for the maritime economy, will take his new office on January 1, 2014. Together with Axel Mattern, he will constitute the Executive Board of HHM. This decision was preceded by an intensive selection process.

Port of Hamburg Seaborne Cargo Down Slightly in 2016

First-half seaborne cargo throughput of 70.2 million tons reflected stabilization of the trend for the Port of Hamburg. At the same time, a steep increase occurred in freight transport by rail to/from the Port of Hamburg. At 70.2 million tons, in the first half total seaborne cargo throughput, which includes the general and bulk cargo segments, was slightly – 0.9 percent – down on the previous year. In the first six months of 2016 containerized cargo handling totalled 4.5 million TEU – 20-ft standard containers – corresponding to a downturn of 1.2 percent.
