Study: EC Shipping Emissions Study Released

Shipping emissions: International measures needed to cut operational greenhouse gas emissions of existing fleet by 2030 – new studyThe international shipping sector needs to quickly adopt short-term policy measures to cut operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the existing fleet, according to a new study. The study concludes that only a subset of potential policy options, namely those that mandate changes in how the existing fleet is operated can achieve the significant effect required to meet the sector’s emission reduction objectives.

“The underwater cleaning industry has historically been very fragmented, with small players offering inconsistent services," said Shaun Harbinson, Chief Commercial Officer, THC. Interferry Welcomes EEDI Status Quo for RoRo Vessels

Trade association Interferry has welcomed this week’s decision by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to uphold previously agreed sector-specific Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) targets for ro-ro passenger and ro-ro freight vessels.The committee’s latest session – MEPC 73 – tightened EEDI requirements for certain ship types, but confirmed that ferries would be among the categories where it is appropriate to retain the original timeline and reduction rates.

IMO/MARPOL Amendments Enter Into Force

Requirements for ships to collect data on their fuel oil consumption entered into force on 1 March. Other important amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) have also entered into force, covering the classification of garbage, including the addition of a new category of “e-waste”, and amendments to the International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate. The ship fuel oil consumption data reporting requirements are the latest mandatory requirements aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of international shipping.

What Next for BWM Regulation?

Protecting marine ecosystems from potentially harmful invasive aquatic species transported in ships’ ballast water is an important part of International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s work to protect the marine environment. The treaty supporting this is the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, which requires ships in international traffic to manage their ballast water and sediments to a certain standard, according to a ship-specific ballast water management plan. But for regulation to be effective, it needs to be clearly understood by all stakeholders involved.

Global Treaty to Halt Invasive Aquatic Species On

A key international measure for environmental protection that aims to stop the spread of potentially invasive aquatic species in ships’ ballast water enters into force today (8 September 2017). The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) requires ships to manage their ballast water to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens within ballast water and sediments.

Climate Agreement for Shipping Is Now One Step Closer to Reality

After two weeks' intensive debate in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) , steps have been taken towards specific measures to reduce shipping's greenhouse gas emissions, says a statement from Danish Maritime Authority (DMA). Ballast Water Convention Fate in the Balance -Coldharbour CEO

Delegates at the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee 71, due to gather in London during the first week of July, may well have the last chance to ensure that the long-delayed Ballast Water Convention is implemented, as intended, in an orderly fashion when ships undergo their special surveys, once every five years. ICS to Tell UN: Shipping Committed to Green Growth

The United Nations Ocean Conference (June 5-9), organized by the UN General Assembly, opens today in New York. On Tuesday, June 6, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) will explain that the global shipping industry is fully committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goal for the protection of the Ocean. ICS says that the decision by President Trump to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement on climate change will have no impact on the shipping industry’s strong commitment to reducing its CO2 emissions.

EU Intensify China Cooperation for IMO CO2 Strategy

Following the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) encourage the intentions of the European Union and the People's Republic of China to intensify cooperation in achieving a global climate deal for shipping. Indications of such cooperation materialised during the 19th EU-China Summit held in Brussels last week. At the Summit, EU and Chinese leaders reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change.

IMO Moves toward Phase out of HFO in the Arctic

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC70) meeting brought progress by member countries toward a phase out of the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by vessels operating in the Arctic. Heavy fuel oil (HFO) breaks down extremely slowly in cold Arctic waters and is very difficult clean up in the event of a spill. While HFO powers some 44 percent of the ships currently operating in the Arctic, it accounts for more than 75 percent of the fuel onboard those ships, according to ICCT figures.

ICS Applauds IMO Roadmap for Enissions Reduction

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has applauded the agreement, last Friday, by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to develop a comprehensive Roadmap for addressing CO2 emissions from international shipping – with initial CO2 reduction commitments to be agreed by IMO by 2018. However, ICS says the IMO Road Map will go much further than the Paris Agreement. “The final stage of the Road Map to be enacted by 2023 should establish a global mechanism for ensuring that these IMO CO2 reduction commitments will actually be delivered.” said Peter Hinchliffe.

ICS: IMO Needs to Agree to CO2 Commitments by 2018

At the UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP 22), in Marrakesh, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) said that the recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreement on a CO2 Road Map for shipping is a significant decision giving further impetus to the substantial CO2 reductions that are already being delivered by the global industry. At an official UNFCCC side event organised by IMO today, ICS Director of Policy and External Relations, Simon Bennett, said, “We are very optimistic that initial CO2 reduction objectives can now be developed by IMO for the sector by 2018.
