German Ports Sign-Up to Arctic Commitment

The ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven, Germany, have joined an ambitious campaign to a ban on heavy fuel oil (HFO) from Arctic shipping – along with more than 80 companies, organisations, politicians, NGOs and explorers.Bremenports GmbH & Co. LNG Bunkering Takes Off in Rotterdam

The throughput of LNG - liquefied natural gas - as bunker fuel in the Rotterdam bunker port increased considerably from 1,500 to 9,500 tonnes in 2018.Meanwhile, the sale of bunker oil - fuel for shipping - in the bunker port decreased from 9.9 million m3 to 9.5 million m3. The decrease can almost entirely be ascribed to the decline in sales of heavy fuel oil from 8.3 million m3 to 7.9 million m3.The Port of Rotterdam Authority suspects that the decline in bunker volumes in Europe’s largest bunker port is a consequence of the increased scale and use of modern vessels in container shipping.

On November 10, Royal IHC successfully launched the Spartacus, a 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) designed and built for DEME. The ceremony took place at IHC's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. A serious water pollution incident occurred on Saturday 23 June 2018 in the Derde Petroleumhaven in the Botlek area of the Port of Rotterdam. A large amount of heavy fuel oil spilled into the water. Unlocking New LNG Transfer Possibilities

Cryogenic hose technology is driving a rethink of LNG transfer in bunkering – and beyond. Many backers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, as well as wider industry stakeholders, have for a while now suggested that it will soon enjoy exponential growth as a future bunker fuel. There are several factors behind this; the increasing number of emissions control areas (ECAs) requiring bunker fuel of 0.1 percent sulphur (SOx) to be burnt near coastal areas where the burning of dirtier heavy fuel oil (HFO) is forbidden.

Schulte's PRONAV Acquisition Greenlighted

The Hamburg-based Schulte Group said it has received clearance by the German Federal Cartel Office for the acquisition of the LNG specialist PRONAV. With this strategic move, the family-owned ship owner and manager continues to increase its capabilities and capacity in the growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. Through the acquisition of PRONAV, the Schulte Group has increased the number of vessels under full management in its third-party management fleet by six additional LNG carriers (LNGC).

Tightening CA Environmental Regs Could Impact West Coast Supply Chains

In a similar fashion to Gulf coast offshore energy producers who, in some instances, must document and count the environmental impact of their third party standby boats, offshore service vessels and other assets, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles could soon be burdened with yet another layer of environmental rules.
