Optimarin Completes IMO G8 and USCG Test Program
Norwegian-based ballast water treatment (BWT) systems manufacturer Optimarin informs it has completed testing of its Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) in accordance with the revised IMO G8 guidelines, while also upgrading its existing U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approval certificates to ensure compliance for zero to two hours holding time.The testing procedures were conducted at the NIVA test facility in Norway from September 2019 to the end of June 2020, with DNV GL operating as the designated Independent Laboratory. Tests were conducted with two different filters simultaneously.

Optimarin, Goltens Ink Spare Parts and Service Deal
Optimarin informs it has signed an agreement with Goltens Green Technologies giving the Norwegian-headquartered ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist a global network of spare parts warehousing and service engineers. The framework agreement, negotiated at this month’s Nor-Shipping, will enable Optimarin to use facilities in Asia, North America and the Middle East to provide its worldwide customer base with local lead times for the commissioning and maintenance of its market proven Optimarin Ballast System (OBS). “We know Goltens very well,” said Optimarin CEO, Tore Andersen.

BAE Systems Starts Construction on GulfMark PSV
BAE Systems’ shipyard in Alabama has begun construction on the first of two platform supply vessels (PSVs) for GulfMark Americas, Inc. Executives and employees from both companies gathered recently at the BAE Systems’ facility in Mobile to oversee the initial cutting of steel for the vessel’s first module, which is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2014. The BAE Systems-built 300-Class Green DP2 vessels are designed by MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting, Ltd. of Poland and will be based on similar PSVs currently under construction for GulfMark abroad. BAE Systems' Alabama Shipyard contracted to build Platform Supply Vessels for GulfMark Americas. GulfMark Americas, Inc. has selected BAE Systems’ shipyard in Mobile, Alabama to build two new platform supply vessels that will serve offshore drilling operations. The contract reflects continued growth in U.S. commercial shipbuilding for BAE Systems and a major step forward in the company’s support to the oil and gas industry. Each of the GulfMark vessels will be qualified under the U.S. Jones Act and will measure 288 feet long and 62 feet wide.

GulfMark Orders Three PSVs from Poland
GulfMark Offshore, Inc. (NYSE: GLF) announced the initiation of a vessel construction program. The first three vessels in the program will be built by Remontowa Shipbuilding SA in Gdansk, Poland, and consists of two 1000 square meter deck area platform supply vessels of the MMC887CD design and one MMC879CD design with a deck area of over 800 square meters. These large and technologically advanced vessels have been designed to meet the demanding requirements for supporting deepwater and harsh environment activities, and are expected to operate in the North Sea market.

Gulf Offshore Selects CapRock VSAT
CapRock Communications announced a three-year contract with Gulf Offshore – a wholly owned subsidiary of GulfMark Offshore Inc. – to deploy its broadband maritime service, SeaAccess Communications, onboard its fleet operating in the North Sea and along the coast of Africa. SeaAccess’ VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) services will enable GulfMark to extend its corporate IT network and applications to its vessels and provide onboard crew morale services. The GulfMark Group operates significant fleets in the North Sea, Southeast Asia and the Americas.
Is it the End for Bender Shipbuilding?
Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co. agreed to seek protection from its creditors, filing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to reorganize. The company announced in a prepared statement that it intended to cut its workforce to about 300 to keep operations, including a ship repair job, running. “I regret very much the impact this decision has on our employees and vendors, and the community,” said Tom Bender, President and CEO, pledging to “devote every waking minute” to getting the company through the process and back to business as usual as quickly as possible.
