Bureau Veritas (BV) appointed Rolf Stiefel as its new Regional Chief Executive based in Hamburg, responsible for Central Europe - Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Russia. Naming Ceremony for New LNG Carrier

On May 14, a naming ceremony was held at the Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that NYK and JERA Co. will jointly own. The ceremony was attended by Satoshi Onoda, president of JERA Co. Inc.; Tadaaki Naito, president of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Bushu Maru” by Mr. Onoda, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. A multidisciplinary Rolls-Royce man is helping LNG’s rise on the water and ashore. For LNG, the future is now.At the heart of Europe’s growing marine supply chain for liquefied natural gas is a man with a degree in anthropology but steeped in engineering and business. Oscar Kallerdahl is Rolls-Royce Marine’s vice-president of LNG systems, and he’s the company’s production, purchasing, engineering and finance lead for getting gas engines aboard vessels.Kallerdahl has 10 years of experience overseeing LNG propulsion projects in Norway and four in Korea.

Beckmeyer Visits Rolls-Royce's MTU Research

Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy paid a visit to MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg to find out more about the company’s development operations in the maritime sector. The important role the Rolls-Royce subsidiary plays in shipping is in fact a two-fold one. Indian Navy Dredger Completes Successful First Year

In mid-April of 2016, the Indian Navy’s grab hopper dredger, Dredger-1 was preparing to depart its birth shipyard following a comprehensive one-year warrantee review. Tebma Shipyards Ltd., Senior Vice President M. Balasubramaniam explained that the 44.15 by 12.2-meter vessel was designed to meet precise deepening requirements around docks and port installations and in riverine or other places where deepening of specific areas is required. The vessel has a 320-HP Cummins-855-powered forward-mounted crane supplied by Titagarth Wagons.

NYK Charters 2 LNG Carriers for Freeport LNG Project

Two joint-venture companies that NYK has established with Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. each concluded a time-charter contract for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. In addition, one of the joint-venture companies, Trans Pacific Shipping 6 Limited, concluded a shipbuilding contract with MI LNG Company Limited,* and other joint-venture company, Trans Pacific Shipping 7 Limited, concluded a shipbuilding contract with Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.

Volvo Penta Debuts Marine Gas Sterndrive Engines

Volvo Penta today unveiled its new family of next-generation 5.3L V8 gasoline engines for the marine sterndrive market in a press preview at the company’s Test Center in Suffolk, Va. “Volvo Penta has a rich history of innovation in marine propulsion, and with these next-generation V8s, we are establishing a new industry benchmark for acceleration, speed, weight-to-power ratio, fuel economy, emissions reduction and proven reliability,” said Ron Huibers, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. Volvo Penta’s new marine engines are based on General Motors’ highly acclaimed Gen V platform.

CNOOC Acquires Asia's 1st LNG Powered Tug

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has taken delivery of Asia’s first tugboat Hai Yang Shi You 525, designed to operate solely on liquefied natural gas as ship’s fuel. Hai Yang Shi You 525, the first of two tugs built by the Zhenjiang shipyard for CNOOC, features a propulsion package based on twin Rolls-Royce Bergen C26:33L9PG engines and a pair of highly reliable Rolls-Royce US 205 CP azimuth thrusters to ensure the tugs have rapid manoeuvring and strong bollard pull capabilities. A successful sea trial has proven an extra gain for both ship speed and bollard pull.

NYK Orders Three LNG Carriers

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has concluded time-charters for two new LNG carriers with Diamond Gas International, a Singapore affiliate of Mitsubishi Corporation. NYK also concluded a contract with MI LNG Company Limited for the construction of the LNG carriers, the company said in its press release. The ships will haul gas from the Cameron LNG (liquefied natural gas)  project in Louisiana in the US to Asia, primarily Japan. These new ships will be delivered in 2018 and assigned to transport LNG for the Cameron LNG Project in the U.S.

ABB Wins Contract from Chinese Shipyard

ABB announced that it will deliver advanced electrical propulsion systems for four LNG carriers under construction by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. The LNG vessels are a joint venture between China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China LNG Shipping (Holdings) Limited (CLNG) and Teekay, and will operate under 20-year time-charter contracts with Methane Services Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BG. LNG carriers are highly sophisticated in terms of technology and are specially designed to transport LNG at a low temperature of minus 162 degrees Celsius.

Mitsui Orders 2 LNG Carriers from MHI

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) reports it has received an order for two next-generation LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers from Mitsui & Co., Ltd., scheduled for completion and delivery in 2018 and 2019, respectively. They will be put into service for the Cameron LNG Project underway in the United States, an initiative in which Mitsui is participating, marking the first order placed to MHI for LNG carriers to transport shale gas. The order for the two LNG carriers was received through MI LNG Company, Limited, a joint venture between MHI and Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

Wärtsilä to Proceed with first LNG Terminal

Wärtsilä has been given full notice to proceed (NTP) from Manga LNG Oy for the supply of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Tornio, Northern Finland. Wärtsilä will commence construction on the site near the port of Tornio in January 2015. Manga LNG Oy is a joint venture of Outokumpu Group, Svenskt Stål AB (SSAB), Skangass and EPV Energy Ltd. Wärtsilä initially announced this project in January 2014. The order, valued at approximately EUR 100 million, will be included in Wärtsilä's order intake in December 2014.

World First: A Purely Gas-Powered Tug

While the advent of gas as power in the marine market is growing increasinly common, most every installation is actually "dual fuel", meaning the vessel is able to use LNG or traditional diesel fuel to power the boat. This weekend in Turkey, however, marked a significant turning point perhaps in the adoption of LNG as fuel in commercial marine vessels, as Rolls-Royce reports that Sanmar Shipyard’s completed a world first: a purely gas powered tug.
